Aloha everyone!

Please forgive me if this has been asked already, but do the attachment points on the Stryker suggest that a future update of ERA blocks were in the works? If so why was this abandoned for the "slat armor" approach? I apologize if this question is rather dumb.

Thanks in advance!!

The attachments bolts are for the add-on armour plates.

But there already in an Add-On Armor (AOA) array for the Stryker.

It is jointly developed and produced by the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) and United Defence LP back in 2003/2004.

The AOA includes United Defence LP developed NXRA (Non-Explosive Reactive Armor) modules fitted to the Stryker glacis and ARL (Army Research Laboratory) developed explosive reactive armor modules fitted to the vehicle sides.

It weighs 8,000 lbs and gives Level B protection all-round, including the rear hull, against RPGs.

This technology was originally developed for the variety of AOA packages for the M8 AGS.

I’m a novice, so please don’t mistake my response as the gospel.

But here is the Stryker armor situation as I understand it. The attachment points all over the vehicle are to allow for the addition of new state-of-the art armor kits (extending the service life of the vehicles).

The “slat” armor currently being using in Iraq is not intended to replace any of the more modern armor kits for Strikers – the “slat” armor is merely a “stop gap” while they are being developed and produced.

To my understanding the additional armor will not be ERA but rather some sort of high-tech ceramic composite tiles that are superior to the ones already installed on the vehicle.

But as I said before, this is just my own limited interpretation of what is going on with Stryker development – I’m sure some others can give you a better overview
