Hi all,
I've recently moved here from Scotland and I was wondering how many modellers stay in the Virginia area? I have 2 model clubs in the area but due to my work commitments get to very few of the meetings.
I was just wondering how many guys on this site are affilliated to any clubs or just model and use this site and others for reference? Do you have many friends around you that model but don't go to any clubs?
Just wondering how you all do it.
Kenny.

Hi, Kenny. Welcome to the US of A. There are actually many VA modelers who visit this site, and also www.missing-lynx.com. I leave near Lynchburg, in the central portion of the state. We have a handfull of clubs in this area, and there is quite a large club in Richmond.

Most of us enjoy building and attend club meetings when possible but, like you, real life often gets in the way. That aside, what do you prefer building?

Hi Kenny, Welcome to the States. I don't belong to any local clubs, I'm not sure if there are any in my area(Delaware). I come to this site for tips, references and inspiration, there are very talented modellers here. You should try posting your question in the My Community section of the forums you'll probably get more responses there...Happy modelling,Vince

You're in luck, there are many AMPS and IPMS members in the Virginia/Maryland area. On Feb 24 there is a show in the Richmond area, jointly hosted by IPMS Richmond and Central Virginia AMPS. AMPS officers will be there if you want to say hello and see who's in your area.

Feel free to sign up at: http://www.amps-armor.org

Hope we see you there !

Kenny,
Welcome to Virginia, I live in Fredericksburg and used to belong to IPMS in Fairfax. I belong to AMPS and try to make it to some of their meetings. Mostly I just build and visit the site. If your ever heading my way send a PM.

Kenny:

I live in Fredericksburg (22405). As often as my and my wife's work schedules will permit, I attend the CVAMPS meetings in Richmond (though it's been a year since I've been able to make a meeting). I think I recall seeing you at one of the meetings (were you starting a Dragon wagon project?). Anyway, I know of no other modelers in my area, so I would dearly love to be able to get to Richmond more often. I'm pretty well a rank amatuer, so I wish that I could get to more of the meetings to learn from Mickey and John and Frank and everyone else, whose abilities so far eclipse my own.

Welcome to the area, Kenny. I live in McLean (22101) but don't go to any regional club meetings (work is too busy, frankly). I'm a member of AMPS since April or so, but haven't gone to their meetings (same reason). I mostly stick to Armorama, with occasional forays to Missing Linx and FSM.

Welcome to the US Kenny. I live down in Virginia Beach area. Don't get to go to any club meetings, part time job at night keeps me pretty busy.

Hi guys,
thanks for your replies. JW I build mostly WW2 to modern armour or armor now I'm in the US lol, I have had a few kits sent over and qa few kits i brought over with me but I'm trying to find a cheap way to get all my model syuff sent over. Shipping it will cost me well over a $1000
Danny I'm going to mark that date on my calender and hope to see you there, I've attended some meetings with the local IMPS and CVAMPS and enjoyed them but my work schedule hasn't allowed me to the last few and I quite miss them.
Hi Andy, I'll try figure out where you are and will definetly get in touch if I'm over your way.
Hi Dave yes I was at the meeting and I'm satill working on my Dragon Wagon, it's kinda difficult as a lot of my stuff for it is still with my parents in Scotland but my mum has no understanding of models and there accessories lol. Hopefully catch up soon again.
Hi Jesse, I'm doing nightshift work myself just now so I can sympathise with you there.
Like you Lucas to, my work keeps me busy.
With my model meetings being on set nights & only once a month to miss a few suddenly you don't see people for a while and I kinda miss it as it's good fun meeting up with like minded people and meeting new friends, for me anyway as I still really don't know a lot of people here.
So what do you guys all build? What are you building at the moment? Any good model stores around you's? Where do you purchase models, dio stuff etc, etc?
Well got to go get ready for work.
Later,
Kenny.

Agree about the CVAMPS meetings - great guys and I really hate to miss the meetings. I don't work nights, but I need to get up at 3:45 am on Friday mornings for work. If I go to the meetings in Richmond, then it just kills me at work on Friday (not to mention that it's hard for my wife to get home early enough on Thursdays for me to make the hour and a half drive South).

Anyway, I am interested chiefly in Eastern Front during WWII. I've got countless builds underway, but getting the bulk of what little time that I have is the old Tamiya SdKfz 232 8 rad (with the Eduard set). I am hoping to turn this into a Wiking vehicle from summer of '42. The photos that I have show hand applied mud camo over the dark grey, so I'm trying to figure out just how to get a realistic approximation to this with pigments. I just picked up the two volume Trojca book on the SdKfz 182 Ausf B and now thoughts of a 424 Tiger at Lissow are creeping into my head (must resist... must actually finish something... ).

As for stores, Fredericksburg is pretty well a wasteland. We have only one hobby shop that I know of. While it does carry DML kits and the guy will order things for me, he keeps very little on hand (fantasy gaming seems to be his main emphasis). He has almost nothing in the way of paints or all the little things that you need, and this is a bit frustrating (and no AFV magazines). I used to run up to Fairfax to Grandads when I needed things - it was a really sad day when Grandads closed its doors for the last time. Now, purchasing of kits and refs is primarily through eBay. I still haven't settled on a web source for the ocassional little stuff that I want.

Anyway, I hope to see you around the block some time,

Dave

Hi Kenney Welcome to the Great State of Virginia. I live in the middle of the Shenandoah Valley in a town called Broadway. I have no clubs near where I live so I use this site to keep up with the latest stuff. I was out of armor modeling for 13 years to Fly R/C aircraft, and now I am slowly making my way back into military modeling. Great bunch of guys on this site.
