I just went through my list. I have 51 different diorama's planned out at this time - mostly 1/35 WWII subjects. Currently I have accumulated all the kits and materials needed to complete 3 with partial acquisitions on probably 2 dozen more. I have the time to complete...

Whaddya think, do I need to stop doing so much planning and spend more time building or what?

I take that back. I have 2 in progress and another one I have set up to do along with my daughter that I didn't count so that makes 54 with materials for 6.

I find the planning process, studying, looking at photographs, etc... one pleasant and attractive dimension of this hobby ! So, as long as you enjoy doing it, why not

best wishes

You never have enough diorama ideas. Never

Specially for this I have a blackbook. Everytime I have a nice dio idea or a good title or whatsoever or I see a good picture I put it in this Blackbook... if neccesary with a couple of rough sketches, Sometimes with dimensions I think would be ok. For some kits will be bought or part of the stuff needed for the diorama will be aqquired.
Some ideas eventually will be forgotten... I'm pretty sure that I'm not the only one having problems... Having a lot of ideas is only good. It means that you will have no problems thinking out your next dio after you finished the first.

My system is to create a MS Word document for each new idea. If the inspiration was a photo(s) I copy and paste those in or I can draw the outline of the idea and drop that in. I can make notes about specific things I am trying to achieve, techniques to try, etc. - all of which can be easily edited later so these files are constantly updated. I can also drop in pictures of the kits I will be using which really comes in handy with buildings and figures to help keep my brain focused on what I was trying to achieve. I can also budget the whole thing out easily by dropping in a spreadsheet.

The real problem is storage and display space for the finished product.

Pretty much the same as I do except your way is much cleaner and orderly looking.

That is not the real problem..... The real problem is facing that from the 20 good dio ideas you come up with every month, eventually only a really really really reeeeaaaallllllly small percentage is actually going to be built.

Abso-diddly-utely Johan! You have hit the nail on the head...
And the idea of a 'blackbook' (how sinister, Robert ) is a great idea also...

LOL I like sinister. Basically the term originated from my days where Graffiti was the religion and the designs for your nice murals you sketched down in a black book.... which was basically not more then that either... just a book with blank pages and a black cover. Always have a few around the house.

True. I find though that while many of my older idea's are on a rather grand scale, most of the more recent ones are much smaller and I find myself paring back the older concepts (who needs a diorama as big as the kitchen table?). Theoretically at least this makes more of them likely to get built since each takes individually less time, effort and expense. Theoretically of course.

I do enjoy the planning process though.
