"I’m an old Canadian gunner who has taken to building models and I was wondering if anyone in your organization could tell me what font was used on unit signs for British & commonwealth vehicles.

The threes especially were unique (see sample)."

have a look at the "Baar Sophia" font:

Could this be the style of '3' you're looking for? Neither the '1' nor the capital 'i' look useful, though.
