Hello Everyone and my First post
Well then I got hold of a Tamiya MK5 Chieftain ( Yep I know its not a proper Mk5)
And thought to myself Oh what colour Choices do I have Let me see
Oh Green and black or I could do Black and Green
Then a Friend of mine Who served in the Army Said to me ''Berlin Brigade Urban Camo''

He showed me A couple of pictures he had
After reading round a few modelling sites it said the dreaded words MK10 AND STILLBREW
Had a word with my Friend and was told that was Rubbish

So off I went , I had to change the Engine covers from 3 to 4
For this I used wire telephone cable and mesh
Added a rear tool box

For the camo I have used Halfords white Primer
Revell 84 Brown and Humbrol 145 Grey Blue
the colours at the moment are a bit on the bright side but I'm still not done with this as yet
Yep loads and loads to do

So have a laugh heres some piccies

Very nice job 'Worm'. I've always liked this unique camo job for a tank. How much would this scheme have weathered really? Would they be fairly clean or would the paint have faded in real life very much. Just wondering....

Can't wait to see it finished, good job so far.

Thanks Bob
Not too sure on the weathering side
What I have been told most where kept Fairly Clean
But I'm going to weather this one slightly

Heres a picture of a Real one Taken I think from the Berlin Hilton

Nice work replicating a very difficult scheme Worm, although I have a couple of questions/comments for you.
I cant help but think that there is too much white on the bow, maybe break it up with a couple of grey blocks?
Why brown for the third colour? as far as I can tell it should be the normal British Green that was used.

Those points aside I think you've done a great job, cant wait to see the weathering you lay down, as said before they would have been kept pretty clean but a wash to bring out the recesses and some dust would be reasonable.

Hi Matthew, the Berlin Brigade scheme doesnt get a lot of publicity so its no suprise you havent seen it before, its probably down to the fact it was disbanded by the time the wall came down in the '90s.
That said it does live on as the Phillipine Marine Corp use a very similar scheme for their LVTP-5's, if you do a Google search you should get plenty of hits.

Ha A man with my own view on the bow
Funny you just said that At this precise time I'm just started laying some grey down on the Area in question
As for the Green its Definatly Brown

Some good pictures here
http://tanxheaven.com/alj/ChieftainMk10Saumur/ChieftainMk10Saumur.htm

I thought it was green at First ..But was told its Brown
Mind you I think Green would look better
And I keep looking at that Ford Granada and keep hearing ''The Sweeny '' music

But tell you something this is a bugger to paint and mask
And does the old eyes in
Anyone who wants to attempt this Buy lots of tammy tape

I might tone the White down at a later stage the Halfords primers a bit on the Bright side ,
Maybe go for a very very light Grey

Cheers Worm

LOL, I hope you take some more pics after you change it around a bit.

Thanks for that link to TanxHeaven, I now cant help wondering if there was two variants of the scheme, one with green and one with brown, especially after finding this link Berlin Parade on the 14th/20th Kings Hussars, either that or the museum repainted the tank and made a mistake with the colour......

Yep got that Link pretty cool stuff there

I did hear they had a chieftain in Berlin ..One side was urban camo
and the other side was green and black
I think they must have run out of masking tape

Now that would be a cool model to do, especially if there was pics to back it up when someone said it was made up...

Well I cant say fairer than that then, a gut that was there would know more than us sitting at home.

Tis interesting though that that pic taken of the Chieftain rolling down the street looks to be a greenish brown, or is that a brownish green?....

If the British Berlin Brigade was anything like the American one, they kept their tanks nice and clean. So you really don't want to get into weathering. OUr Brigade borrowed tanks when they went to Graf for gunnery. We derisevly called them the "Spiffy boys" in my group (!-68 Armor from Baumholder. I think I am going to duplicte your effort with my Chieftan kit. I have always loved unique cammo schemes.

we called them the same things when i was stationed in Baumholder also. All those guys got to do was polish their tanks and do parades. But I wouldn't have traded them duty stations for all the money in the world. I was in Alpha Company 2/68 Armor from March 85-March 88. Loved that place. If it wouldn't have been for my wife wanting to come home I would have stayed 3 more years.

Well just a little progress
Today I scratch built the side Radio pod ... luckily for me I had a spare side tool box ( You can see the tool box next to the radio)

The measurement of the Tool box was 2 cms ..where as the radio need to be 1 cm
so i chopped out 1 cm , Covered it in plastic card
The hieght of the radio was ment to be just under 1cm so that was filed down
I then scribed in some detail ( You can't see much at the moment)

Then I just painted the top of the tool box Brown and Grey blue

Well nearly there ..Got all the windows done not too happy with the blue
So I might change them to dark grey then go over them in Tammy smoke
But I'm at the stage where its ready for future
Dont worry about the Inner wheels being green ..I'm doing those and the tracks last thing

Cheers
just buy loads of tammy tape
thing is this is a pain in the butt to do , you paint it ..then think cool its finished
then you see a spot you missed .... so you end up going round in circles
gets a bit boring after a while ..but worth it in the end
i bet you can probably see about 30 bits that need touching up
but I think its worth it in the end looks a bit weird

Well shoved some decals on her today ... And gave her a wash
next stage is the dullcote and pastel time ... but I must remember to paint that grey bit on the lower Hull
