I am not sure if the above is just a fantasy camo pattern on a KV1 or not. I have seen a couple b/w pictures that look as if they have camo on them, but never a color version.

do a search for Finnish KV tanks quite a few have camoflauge on them they have the Finnish swastika on them as well which may put you off.

Hi plenty of photos show such a cammo used not only on the KV1 but ant tank guns and other tanks as well, All published in russian magazines mainly Front line illustrations , which I have nearly all published so far. cheers ian

Red brown camo was pretty common with some units. You might want to check this book out, it has a photo of a KV in a similar shceme. I'm not sure about those black outlines though

That looks nice. I am looking for something different than the dark green you almost alwyas see on the KV-1's.

I ran across a really nice looking color scheme on a T-34. It was different shades of blue/gray on a white base coat.

In reality we can actually use anything we would like. Sure those who are after ultra realistic wouldn't do it, but those of us who might feel like doing things a little different can.

Several years ago I built one of those Testors F-19 Stealth planes and made it from Vietnam. It was pretty hot looking.

I do like the idea about doing a three color with Finish markings. The swastika doesn't both me all that much.

Excellent choice! I have build this one myself. Just remember that this type of camouflage was only used on the Leningrad front as far as I know.

I of course build my KV-1 in this camouflage while I were studying in Russia - in Leningrad aka St. Petersburg

had a look through some of the pics I have accumulated and there are so many I could not find the colour pictures of the KV tanks but here are some to help visualise what I was talking about.

Wow. That camo really brings this tank to life. Perhaps one of my other KV 1's will sport a nice camo, Great post Jim and nice references guys.

The exact scheme and markings in the box art you posted is documented in some Russian books I have. The unit had T-34s in this scheme too.

Thants good to know. I like having the different colors on Soviet armor. The overall dark green just looks so plain, even after weathering. I will keep up my search for some interesting schemes and post them here when i find them. I guess if I use a scheme that is tied to the Finnish it will work out well since I am going to do my T28 and OT-26 in winter schemes from the Winter War.

I am writing from memory here so don't trust this 100%, but if I recall correctly, the unit with that KV cammo scheme with the black outlines was based in the Caucasus. It's a long way from there to the Finnish front

I suspect you are spot on with were the specific KV tank was based that is on the stamp, my only intention was to present options for the painting of Russian vehicles in colours other than Green.

I have seen some interesting 2- and 3-color camo schemes for Soviet armor and would like to do one, but haven't seen one with the black outlines before. Looks interesting, if a tad bit more French than Russian.

A note about the markings on Finnish tanks: the hakiristis (hooked cross) markings used by the Finnish armed forces predate the German swastikas by several years, starting in 1918, when Hitler was still just a corporal.
