I am reading a book "The Tank Killers" and during the battle of Normandy, one of the modifications made by some units was to move the M10's .50cal from the rear of the turret and mount it to the gun mantle and then installed parascopes so they could fire the .50 cal without exposing themselves. Does someone have some photo's of that modification and the units that tried this? Thanks for your efforts to help out. Greg.
P.S. This somehow ended up in the Canadian armor section but was supposed to be in the General Armor section.

Greg, the mounting itself is simple. The standard mount was welded/bolted to the turret roof. Could be either side, depending on who was tasked to fire it; nobody standardized these thinks. Not sure about the periscope, unless a standard tank periscope and mount was attached to a plate and simply welded to the edge of the turret roof. I'm not sure how effective that would be. Unlike the bow gun on a Sherman, the periscope wouldn't be very well lined up with the gun axis and target acquisition would seem pretty difficult. My own supposition is that a crew member simply peeked over the top of the turret through the gunsights and aimed normally. Yes, he's exposed...but much less so than with the rear mount, which just about requires the gunner to be completely outside standing on the engine deck to fire the thing forwards. Not a bad book, BTW; I have it myself. HTH,
Greg
