I can't findthis anywhere,
What colour beret's did the KSLI wear during WW2?
I know they have worn rifle green scince 1968 but can't find out what it was previously. B+W pics seem to show it is darker than their kahki uniforms but I was under the impression that the green beret was worn by the royal marines comando during the war.
Any help much appreciated.
Cheers,
James

Would an infantry unit have been issued with berets during WW2? Could it just be the beret like General Service Cap you've seen, which would have been khaki. The "British Soldier, D Day to VE Day" has and illustration of a rifle green coloured Field Service Cap (thats the boat shaped forrage cap).

Hi Geoff,
I'm definately talking beret's here its for an officer figure im painting. I've modified him from the Masterbox figure set 'British Troops-Caen 1944'
Armorama review HERE.
I'm using the same head as the officer figure with the beret, standing next to the Tommy in the helmet.
Would his beret be rifle green if he was from the KSLI or khaki?
Cheers,
James

I found a photo of some KSLI troops recieving rations on page 126 of the book I mentioned in the previous post (this is volume 1). There is an officer in the shot (you can see his tie) and he is wearing the General Service cap with a rifle green patch behind the badge. If the figure you're doing is in a beret, then I'd go for khaki though I've no conclusive proof of this. If you've seen photos where the cap or beret is darker than the battledress, as an officer its just possable it was a private purchase or from Canadian stocks. The Canadian uniforms were of a greener shade of khaki, and as they were of finer material they were highly prized items.

Thanks for the information Geoff,
It seems that rifle green was definately associated with the regiment at this point at least. Perhaps a kahki beret with a rifle green patch behind the regimental badge would be a happy medium?
I think a rifle green beret may be too alike to the royal marines.
On the other hand it may be nice to have it anyway in order to better represent the regiment.
hmmm, choices, choices.
Thanks again for the info Geoff,
James
