If I had an AVF painted in panzer grey and wanted to show some paint chips, what would the base color (underneath panzer grey) be? What if had an AVF painted in Dark Yellow or Olive Drab? What would be the base color?

I believe that German armour was painted in red oxide primer in the factory before the final paint scheme was applied. Sorry I can't give you any paint numbers for that colour.

Hi all
While we're on the subject of chipped paint etc I would be interested to know what techniques you all use for this effect.I'm just finishing a Tamiya Tiger 1 (initial production) and as my first real attempt at weathering i want to simulate worn/ chipped paint on hatches clips etc. The plan is for the Tiger to be fairly new in theatre with bodywork etc in
reasonable condition just wear and tear. your advice would be much appreciated.
Regards
Peter

I've seen various posts about oxide red as a base coat. I'll also say, I've never seen it done. I usually see some type of steel.

Chipped paint, like dry brushing is not "trendy" anymore. It was a phase that everybody seemed to try to attempt, but not many got it right.
I believe both skills are very helpful, and can be the making of a brilliant weathering job. The trick is to get it right and not overdo it! As most tanks didnt survive long enough to get overlly rusty, they should have some on worn edges, etc.
I try to keep the chips as small as possible and use german camoflauge red brown and dark grey 2:1 (humbrol). This looks quite good. When dry, some vertical streaks from the chips using thinned burnt sienna looks effective also. This is my method...... and I definately am no expert at this. My first two attempts have been way overdone ... even for my own liking.
My best tip is to go around the entire vehicle lightly and look at it, then decide should it have more. Dont stay in the one area too long...... then it turns out with some paint over rust if ya know what i mean!
