Hi All,
Would a British MkIII in NW Europe have the armour plate welded over the internal ammo storage positions?
Thanks in advance
Tom

Yes. The added armor was initiated even in the Mediterranean theatre. By the time tanks went into France, they would have either rec'd the upgrades or were taken into stock with factory added patches. It's possible to see an odd un-armored one here or there I suppose. But there was a concerted effort to up armor every "dry" Sherman hull in UK workshops before the Normandy invasion.
You'll sometimes see Firefly VCs w/o the armor patches as their hulls had different ammo stowage. During the upgrading from Sherman V to Sherman VC, no extra effort would have been made to add patches. Sometimes, V hulls which had already rec'd the patches were taken into the VC program -- that's why you see both patched and non patched VCs.

Thanks Roy,
That's what I expected but I thought I'd make sure.
