Hello people,

Can anyone help me with a little reference help.
I have a Tamiya kit of a Churchill Mk VII and want model it in desert livery. I can't seem to find any references as to which battlallion used them.
I have a feeling it was in the Lybian campaign.
Any ideas?

Many thanks,
Edge.

I know there were Churchills used in the Tunisia from 1943 onwards and i believe there were a few mk iiis at Alamein. Hope this is of some use to you.

The MK VII reached the battlefield in late 43.

The only Churchill tanks to serve in the Western Desert were 6 Mk III's sent out for evaluation. It was felt that the cooling system was not suitable for tropical climates. They acted as an independent unit known a "Kingforce" (o/c was Major Norris King, Royal Gloucester Hussars), attached to 1st Armoured Div. The unit saw action twice, first at Kidney Ridge then at Tel el Aqqaqir (27th Oct & 3rd Nov 1942, respectivly). Inspite of having one tank destroyed and two damaged they performed well enough for two Churchill brigades to be added to 1st Army in Tunisia. More details can be found in the Osprey Vanguard /New Vanguard books.

Hi there

As the other guys said, there were no Churchill VIIs used in the desert.

The Kingforce Churchills used at Alamein had large accordian filters on the front, and were painted desert sand with black camo stripes.

I'm not sure what the Tunisian Churchill camo schemes were, but my best guess is they were green like the most of the rest of the armor used from the Torch landings.
