Ok, this is one of my new ideas (I should definitely build more and stop dreaming of ideas #:-)).

This is one I have written down in my little black book, but not one I am likely to build, I still thought that the idea was cool and wondered how you guys would solve it.

The thing that stands by me about the first and second Gulf War (except the stupidity) are the night vision images like these for example

I was thinking of a shadow box containing a M1 tank, a Humvee and a few soldiers on route to the front (scale 1/72)
In the background you could see the flashes of the artillery hitting the enemy.

For looking at the scene I was thinking of using a toy (plastic) binocular, would do the job perfectly.

Now, how would you do it? creating the scene and the flashes is no problem (LED) but how to create the grainy picture and the green glow, hmmmm green fluorescent paint?.

Just wondering :-) and who will dare to build this?

To get the grainy green look use green plastic to cover the lense of the binoculars and stipple ( small dusting of paint) black or dark green onto the green plastic. To stipple, take an old tooth brush and put some paint on it and drag your finger across it to fling paint onto the plastic. DOnt know if it will work, but it might.
I like your idea, you wont have to paint the figures and tanks with alot of detail because the veiwer will only see green and the shadows of the models. Cool idea! :-)

The funny thing is that I was thinking about the same thing after I saw some of those pics on the news. I thought of it a bit differently though, in that it wouldn't be a box dio. I remember seeing a WWII dio painted so that it looked black and white and thought you could do the same but using the greenish colour instead. This method would obviously take a lot of careful painting, though, and you wouldn't get it to look so grainy.

LOL ! Well, if I ruin my paint job, I can still box the model and put a green sheet in front

Thats a cool idea I would love to try that only thing how would you the whole dio view from the night vision. I know if you turn binoculers around backwards things are futher away I dont know this really gets the imagination rolling any way someone has to try it. Its just to cool of an idea.Just like the sniper scope dio but modern.

you could do the same thing except as a vision block rather than a bino view still have to shade things out in gray to pick up contours and contrasts

I thought about an idea and thought and came up with this one.Make it look as if you are seeing through an M-1s IR scanner or nightvision scope.Tha would be a neat twist on it.

I think I would head to the local photo shop and inquire about a green lens. You may even ask about a 'grainy' lens also. The types of lenses would be the simple ones that screw on the end of a regular 35mm lens.
Or second though is to check out an art store or drama type store and inquire about light filter. Tapping into my days in drama club (don't laugh) lights were covered with 'lenses' that altered the color. They may have or you may be able to find a green one.

Scott you are talking about light "gels".All they are is a clear sheet of paper(I think) and they change the color of them to put in front of lights. The only thing about it is I dont think it is a form of paper because it is heat resistant. Its made of the same material you use to make for clear sheets on a over-head during a presentation, etc.

Good idea Ronny! I'm with Zach about using the overhead projector clear sheets, they've got the "grainy" appearance and you can sray a coat of Tamiya clear green on it. I suggest you get the ones for laser printers for two reasons: they ar heat proof (a photo unit of a laser printer is quite hot during printer) and they are non chemically treated as the inkjet ones to get the ink sticking on them, so they are definitely more stable whem you paint them.
Ciao and let us know about the progress.
