I'm thinking about trying to build a model of my Iraq HMMWV (M998) but I've been unable to find any source for a ASK conversion (with the flip out windows). Does such a critter exist or will I have to scratchbuild?

Hey Mike,
In the October 2007 issue of Fine Scale Modeling there is a great article on how to scratch build a up-armored HUMVEE w/ the ASK kit. It also cover on to lower the suspension as it is noticeable on the real Hummer. Again great article with great detail.

Marcel,
That's it. The door handles and windows don't look quite right though. The door handles seem to be a little low on the door and i'm trying to figure out what the "handle" looking thing is in the lower left corner of the windows. Thanks for the site. I'll definately check it out.

Joe,
Thanks! I remember reading about it in last months magazine. Is the issue on the stands now? If so, I'll definately pick up a copy this week. BTW, what kit are you using for the UH-1H? I had that project in mind for a future build. I was a doorgunner on the Huey in the late '70s and thought it would be fun to build my bird. I was actually thinking of using the new Dragon D model and making the very few mods needed to change it from a D to a H.

Marcel,
Just a side note. I hated the ASK on the HMMWV. The windows wouldn't open all the way and we had to use brute force to open them as wide as they would. The small window was near impossible to shoot out of. The doors tended to jam and there were times I had to use the butt of my rifle to actuate the handle on the inside causing me to fear a fire in the vehicle. I had one HMMWV that stayed on the FOB and I took the doors off just because of that problem. But the ASK did provide protection from small arms and some IED's so I really shouldn't complain. It actually did save me from a near miss 107 rocket. I suffered some soft tissue damage to my right side rather than a loss of limbs or life.

Yes it is...just got mine on Monday. As for the H' Huey, well I'm using the 80's Revell kit. I'm Building a Huey from the 80's, a Guard unit (42nd "RainBow"Division) here in Buffalo, NY. I'm also using FireBall Modelworks decals for the US Army and data.

If you can't get your hands on the old 1/32 Revell UH-1H kit, try the new Dragon UH-1D kit. It comes with just about all the parts needed to make an H version as well, nice PE and figures too. Check it out over in the Aeroscale Rotary Wing Forum and a review here.

Thanks Gino!. The Revell kit appears to be hard to find. So I think I'll just go with the Dragon D and make the mods on it (like sanding down those huge rivets).
