I am building a Desert Storm M1A1, 1st Plt. D Co. 24th Inf. Div. 1991 subject of a illustration from New Vanguard book but unfortunately with no information about its bumper number.
Does someone have that information?

Thanks in advance

Unfortunately, you don't have the full unit designation for the bumper number. You are missing the Bn and a vehicle #.

The bumper # standard looks like this (when looking at the vehicle front or rear):

Left side:
Division and Bn

Right side:
Company and vehicle # (usually 11-14 for 1st Plt, 21-24 for 2 PLT, 31-34 for 3rd PLT)

It should look something like this:

Left
24 I 1-64^ (with the ^ being a triangle for Armored Bn)

Right
D 12

Have any more info on the Unit ID?

Gino got it 99% correct.

It should look like this: 24-1-64^

I dont know why, but the I (for Infantry) wasnt on the bumper number. but like Gino said, your missing the battalion indentifier.

2-69 was another M1A1 battalion of the 24th ID

Evidently the inclusion of the "I" to designate "Infantry" at the Division level seems to have come and gone over time. I was in the 8th Inf Division in Germany from 1972-1977 and our unit's bumper numbers were 8-1F2, with the "F" indicating Field Artillery. Our neighbors down the street with the 1st Bn of the 13th Inf sported the following: 8-1I13, and the guys on the other side of post in the 68th Armor had 8-1^68. However the other Division within the Corps, 3rd Armored Division used 3^ followed by the unit designation.

I just figured that the thinking was that unless specifically identified otherwise in the number, it was assumed that a "Division" was Infantry.

Must be sort of like the hats (black berets for everyone) and the elimination of the Army Green uniform to be replaced by Dress Blues. Somebody doesn't like the way it's being done and figures he needs to change it.

I served with the 24th from '88-90 and we never had the "I" on our bumper numbers-I was with 3-69 AR. Dan
