Hi all,

Here are a few pics of a Flak 36 dio I'm building. Base has been laid, made out of polystyrene foam on an MDF base. The 'rocky outcrop' is made of cork bark and the boxing made of balsa wood.

One question though : I can't decide whether the gun should point 'into' the scene of outwards.

Your opinions please??!!

TIA
Quintin

I like the second. Thought perhaps the balance got a bit off with the gun pointing outwards.

I like the first photo I think the gun being at right angles to the rocky outcrop opens up the scene

I also like the second layout, it is just a thought but why not have it point out over the rocks as if it was in defilade (I hope that is the correct term and spelling) if you are modeling an anti-tank role. I would also turn the carrage so the towing arm pointed away from the gun, I do not think they would turn it around after setting the gun, just move it out of the way.
Nice looking gun

If you are going to add a crew then I would have to suggest the first photo. If not then I'ld go with the second. Your 88 looks amazing, really nice!

Ah, one of my favorite subjects. The FLAK 36 is the only kit of which I have multiple copies in the stash.

The first shot is a more conventional, "by-the-book" pose but the second one really grabs me for some reason so much more. I definately prefer the second pose.

hmmm....
Why not use the rocks as a cover for the FlaK?
Try pushing it closer to the rocks with the barrel aiming over them. This way you'll have all the space for the crew and other stuff such as ammo, carriages and and and..
This way the focus will shift a little toward the crew and the FlaK will seem less dominating..

Just a suggestion

I agree, I like the second image better than the 1st and why not keep the theme going and rotate it a bit more over the rocks for cover (as mentioned).

Couple other minor points, the legs of the 88 in conjunction with the dollies should be considered. Where would the tow arm be pointed, probably out, where would the folding arms be compared to the wheels, probably at 90 degrees. I know these are minor things, and things the crew could have shifted, so these are more things to think about than things that are 'wrong'.

love the boxing! The rocks look very good too. Keep us updated/

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I'm leaning towards the gun pointing inward, it just works better somehow. I've decided not to add the whole crew, but only one guy, maybe sitting on the rock having a smoke.

The idea behind this is that the crew are quickly having a bite to eat during a break in the fighting, and this crewmember was assigned to keep watch over the gun.

Once again, all suggestions / comments are welcome!

Quick update!

Now you can see what the end result should look like. I only need to finish a few small things on the gun and then I can start putting everything together. I'm also going to add some grass/foliage around the scene for added depth.

I'm going to add a lot more mud around the gun and carriages to try and make the scene a bit more gritty.

As always, comments welcome!

Quintin

The positioning works. The snow looks very good.

Nice update, not much to critique this go'round. Keep on moving with it.

Looks awesome, like the way the snow and mud came out. Looking forward to the crew being placed in there, will finish the scene nicely!

Thanks for the pictures!

Cheers!

Must agree with Scott ... the groundwork really has come out well, and makes for an excellent scene. The colouring and effects have added so much realism. I also like how natural the boogies and gun are laid out. Nice one, Quintin!
