Continued from "Help recon Shermans #1"
Hi there,
here I am with another recon problem. I know almost nothing on Shermans, so I hope someone can help me doing the job.
Thanks in advance for your time and kindness

I'm no specialist, but :
-first on page : M4a1 hull, recognizable because it's cast (rounded and not square sides)
The turret looks strange, I know nothing about it.
- second on page : ?

The top few pictures are of an M4A1 (like PenPen said). The M4A1 is easy to tell from all others because it is the only cast hull Sherman with the rounded sides and front.
The next group of pictures are an M4A3 (76). The turret is most definately a T-23 turret which mounted the 76mm gun. I'm not 100% sure that it is an M4A3, but if I were a betting man I would bet that it is.

The first one is an M4A1, maybe an early one cause of the degree of the front plate when looking by the side.
The second one is M4A3 76W (wet stowage).

The first one is definitely an M4A1 but the second one I believe is an M4 (76) W. If you look at the top of the engine deck you will see that it is the same configuration as the M4 and M4A1 and not an M4A3. Also the rear access to the engine compartment is double doored like the M4 where as the M4A3 has a single door. Also note the intakes at the rear / top of the sponsons, another characteristic of the M4.

As far as I know the M4 never had a front glacias plate like the one in the picture and the rear portion of the upper hull doesn't look like an M4 either. I still think that it is either an M4A3 or a bastardization of an M4A3 upper hull with an M4 or M4A1 lower hull.

I think we'll have to send Fabio back to get some more shots of these tanks....some from the top looking down on the engine deck would help quite a bit with ID. I agree the back end of the second one looks a litle odd but if you look under the turret bustle it appears to have that M4 / M4A1 configuration.

I think everyone agrees the first is an M4A1.
The second is an M4 76mm wet.
Look at the rear end shot: straight across bottom of the upper hull, the extra filler cap on the rear deck is visible, as well as the engine air intake right uner the rear of the turret, and the M4 rear engine access doors, Plus (as is more evident in the side shot) there are no stops to catch the engine access doors that open to the sides on an M4A3..
