My nephew just emailed this link to me.
Incredible.
The video of the making of this diorama is also worth watching.

I saw this on Tv last night and I was staring in shock until one of my friends said 'cool CG'. An argument ensued... I won.

I'm not much of a gamer but that was a nicely done dio. I think that I might have picked up a few ideas too.

I too am wondering about the way they made that explosion. it's very nicely done! i just looked at the site posted above. you can see they used cotton wool for smoke trails, but the explosions remain a mystery to me. possibly painted acrylic resin with a backlight in it?

No doubt about it, some serious work went into that dio, and it's impressive, even though I have no interest in the game or the 'fantasy' side of things.
However, as with all large dio's I think that the detail painting isn't the best, as the figs have to be 'mass-produced' and so the time isn't spent on them as you would in a smaller dio.
As for the explosion, my feeling is that it may have been added in afterwards using CGI, as with the guy at the end with his head moving etc. It looks too detailled to have been made in the dio, especially when you compare it to some of the modelled guns muzzle flashes which aren't that convincing.

Great link all the sam, thanks for sharing.

The size and complexity is impressive, and the effect is indeed 'cool', but as others have stated, I'm not that interested in the fantasy side of things, and, as in the old adage, the devil is in the details. The figures are not that convincing, the detail painting is rough and some even look like they're GI Joe action figs dressed up.

We have to understand the demographic though. The game and the ads are aimed at the 14 - 20 year old boys and not the serious modeller, so the same quality one would expect at a model contest isn't evident here.

Having said all that, I sure wouldn't mind seeing this monster in person.

cheers

That was really wold. Halo is one of those game series that once you play it you are hooked. I trying to figure out how I can get a game system so I can play it when it comes out.

Anyway, about the dio. The level of detail is fantastic.

Wow--the level of effort that went into that dio is astounding. Interesting bit: when you do the glide-through, the explosions don't look like they are CG renderings, but they still look real good. I think they are probably illuminated from inside.

I think I just might play Halo 3 on a friend's machine, despite my carpal tunnel. Halo 2 was awesome, and 3 looks like a hit (plus, you gotta give them points for this dio!).

I noticed that commercial. Its amazing in HD. I've always loved Halo's storyline but not just that but how the advertisers tease the populace about it, especially the first trailer. And yes much of that commercial is 3D rendered including the explosion.

BTW if you are a fan of soundtrack music, check out the Halo 2 and 3 music, its very well done.

I saw the commercial on the TV tonight in HD also and it's fantastic. Now I wish that I had a bigger TV.

But I will need to get a better video card for the computer after seeing the videos online.

wish they made a diorama for world in conflict. That would be cool :)

I think it is layed out really well, but apart from the explosions and nice sculpting of the infinatry but apart from that its just ok. It's probably in 1/16 and large. If it was done at 1/35, I'ld be very impressed

I've just seen the advert on TV several times and, to be honest, it's pretty poor. They just about get away with it on a 'puter monitor, but on a digital transmission it looks positively 'naff (as someone mentioned) - like G.I. Joes..

However, the game is an excellent reason to buy an XBox...

Why exactly are you going to need a better video card? The game is not released on the PC yet, and is exclusively released for the xbox360.

Also, typical that in this forum you'd have comments stating that its aimed at the 14-20 year old. The video-gaming generation spans into ages that are as dinosaur-oriented as the inviduals making said comments. However, to each their own I suppose. Considering the size and scope of this project, incorporating any more detail would have made this an undertaking of an entire team working full-time for several years. Such as it is, it is still impressive.
