On the back of modern German tanks/afvs there is a shield shaped object with a white cross on it.What is it used for?

Hi,

it is a way for the driver which is driving behind that vehicle to estimate the distance I have been told. It apparantly works well at night.

Night driwing (already said in other post).
The "bump" in the middle is a little lamp (with protective bars or cover)
which shines a weak light on the shield and the white lines.
