I got a question
Does anyone know of any kits of the M551 Sheridan. I have been playing the new game World in Conflict and I thought it would be cool to do a large vignette of the Christmas battle and feature the three AFV's from the battle, an M1A1 Abrams, M2 Bradley, and the M552 Sheridan.
The vignette would show a road and the vehicles coming down and the houses lining the road all covered in snow and have their Christmas decorations out.
Sorry, but if you haven't played the game, it's hard to describe the almost emotional moment of the game and what I am hoping to depict.

Jaguar also makes a full resin kit, but the price tag is quite salty.

My two cents, avoid the Jaguar kit at all cost! It is a nightmare and not worth a dime. The Tamiya kit needs much work, but it can be done depending on your skill level. The Academy kit seems to merit a go.
Hope this helps

If you're concered about detail, the Academy kit is junk. The Jaguar kit is very good. Some people just have problems with resin.
Sir-- most respectfully, I would challenge you on that statement. The Jaguar version is expensive ($90+), has horrible instructions and is of highly questionable accuracy.

Sir-- most respectfully, don't call me sir, I work for a living. Yes it is expensive. Yes the instructions aren't great, but about par for resin kits. As for accuracy it's light years ahead of the Academy kit. Yes, it takes more work than sloping some glue on a plastic kit. In MY opinion it's the better kit detail wise. It's not the easier kit to build. To see just how bad the Academy kit is I suggest you take a look at this link.

Here's another link to show some of it's problems.

I guess it comes down to those who assemble and those who build.

Hey guys, before this becomes a major argument over Academy vs Tamiya vs Jaguar
I am not looking for uber-detail in the M551, it is gonna be covered in snow and stowage.
I have already gotten the Tamiya M1A1 w/ mine plow and the ODS M2 Bradley w/ interior
One other question, is there a model railroad scale that is close to 1/35, I need to make two houses in the neighborhood and the tanks are in the street

G scale would be the closest which ranges from 1/24 to 1/32

If its a Christmas sort of theme, you might wait about a month and try some crafts 'Christmas Village" kind of stuff. depending on the location of your dio, there are also quite a few resin/plaster manufacturers of buildings in 1/35th.

I doubt you are going to find many 1/32nd scale railroad accessory houses, as most Garden scale train accessories sold in the USA are in 1:22.5 (the same tracks are used for multiple scales, and 1/32nd seems more popular in Europe). Still, you could try the dedicated railroad suppliers online.
However, Miniart offers a range of buildings in 1/35th scale, though most depict bombed out ruins. They are mostly vacuformed with injection molded details.
Hansa Systems USA offers plastic parts to construct your own house, if you want to design a unique one for your diorama. http://www.hansasystemsusa.com/products.htm

The academy kit is decent. Just build it. Despite all the dissing, It will look like a Sheridan when you finish. (FYI There are some nice bolt heads and buckles molded on the sprues too, so look before you throw)

OK
Ordered the Academy M551 from Great Models, they had a slightly updated version, and I also ordered the Fruilmodel tracks and a stowage set from Legend.
I know this little scene will offend a few die-hard "accurists" as you could call them. All three vehicles will be in a nice snow camo paintjob, and the M1A1 will be one of them. HA HA
The base is probably gonna be 2.5' x 1.5' and I will use air-dry clay fro the basic terrain features and I have a strip of roll out urban road.
I think that I can find some houses at Hobbylinc, they have a lot of those things.
I am probably gonna start this after Oct 13, we have a model contest at the local HobbyTown USA here in Vegas and I am entering my AFV Club SdKfz 251/20 UHU, then I will have the time to really start this project.
HOO HA!

The Fruilmodel Tracks go a long way on improving the looks, as quite frankly the kit tracks pull a 30 inch vacuum.

I would have to concur with the choice of the Academy. It is the lessor of the evils. I also have worked with the Hansa system which is excellent. Here in Dallas, we make a lot of forms and such and then cast our own resin parts. Houses will be tough though....especially European style. You might want to look at some of those 32nd scale figure companies that sell the pre-painted metal figures...they do sell some structures that might be quite useable for what you want. I see them advertised frequently in Military History magazine and Keith Magee's shop (Hobby Annex) has access to a lot of that as well as the Hansa system and resin casting supplies.

This scene isn't in Europe
It takes place in a small town in Washington state
Not far from Seattle

Modern US is going to be extremely tough. Best bet is to get the Hansa stuff (bricks and cinderblocks and I think that have some rafter material)and scratch the rest.

You're definitely right about that, so for now I am gonna tackle the three AFVs and the crews and soldiers.
Once they're done, I will start tackling the complicated diorama.
Finally, the military clothing store here at Nellis AFB has started selling the new ABU uniform and when i got mine today, I started getting some cool cama ideas for future projects, think Digital Tiger Stripe Pattern

Speaking of the Tamiya Sheridan, I just started one last night while Kelly's Heroes was one T.V. and I have to admit, this kit will be finished by the weekend as far as assembling. Only 2 sprues of parts and that includes the road wheels and the detail is scarce. It will get the image across but there isn't much as far as detailing is concerned.
So I think I'll go out and get the Academy as soon as this is completed just to do a side-by-side comparison of the 2 kits.

Jeff-- you might consider adding the Legend Sheridan stowage kit to the model. Lucky Models has it for a low price with no shipping charge.
