hello guys...

i'm making a large dio of a streetfight, and there are a lot of cobblestreets. Now i saw the "verlinden" streets, and they look very beautifull, but i don't know how to paint my street. Can someone please tell me, how i should paint my street!

I would paint it overall brownish grey. Then paint individual stones with different shades of the base color. Give the whole thing a dark wash to fill in the spaces between stones and in the end drybrush the whole thing.

Here is one way, you can definitely deviate as you see fit.
First cover the entire street in an appropriate base coat or gray (could be brown based depending on the cobbles)
Next mix a variety of different grays/bowns. I will sometimes start with a light color and then continually add more to my mix to darken it. Paint individual cobbles randomly. You can go nuts and do each one individually or just a few - up to you.
Once you get the basics down make a wash of dark gray or dark brown. Apply the wash, either over the whole thing or just in the creases. I would go over the whole thing first at least once. Then you can alter the wash color and go back in random fashion and add washes to different creases and areas.
I would then dry brush highlights on the cobble tops with a buff or light brown or light gray color.

That's kind of a basic process and you can deviate as you wish.

Here in Italy we've got several type of cobble we use to make streets. The most popular are in order: dark grey a sort of light gray/brwn and a pinkish one.
I'll try to summarize the steps I do:
1) prime the street with whatever I want or I feel more confortable with
2) once dry, I arbrush (or brush if the area is not too wide) the basecoat in one of the above mentioned colors
3) once dry, I give a wash with a lighter gray in case I went for the dark gray, or raw umber/burnt sienna in the other two
4) once dry, I drybrush with a lighter shade of the base coat
For me it makes no difference what kind of colors I use for any of the steps enamels/acrylics for the basecoat and oils/enamels/acrylics for washes and oil/enamels for drybrushing...

I did it this way.

I bought a spray can of olive drab and sprayed the section. While it was wet, I wiped the surface very lightly with a paper towel. I then picked out various bricks in different colours. What you end up with is a faint grey brick, with slightly moldy looking cracks. I read this in an article by Verlinden, it looks very good and it's very quick.

Hi Rhemz: I made a cobblestone street base recently. I just painted it all over gray, then went over random cobbles with brownish grey and multiple shades of grey. Then outlined the joints between cobbles with black, and gave it a healthy coating of brownish grey pastel chalk dust to blend it all together. You can check out what mine looked like i the Msn gallery (bison droppings)

By the way if you havn't already bought the custom street you can build them yourself. Just set your base with whatever plaster mix you have handy (i use wallboard compound) sand it fairly smooth and take any old sharp object (a nail) and scribe/carve out your bricks any pattern you want into the plaster. You can make manholes, sidewalks, whatever you can think off. And if you don't like the look of it, cover it with plaster again and start fresh. Good luck!

Excellent comments here... not much I can add excpt this: IF you are using the resin Cobblestone piece from Verlinden (or the version from Custom Dioramics, which is also quite nice) be sure to wash the piece well in warm water and soap, as the release agent used can cause your paint to rub off.... and of course, I also suggest using a base primer coat, and then picking out individual stones in similar shades. I prefer to do my streets in PLASTER instead of resin, as the porous plaster absorbs the paint pigment in a more natural way IMHO... I also like to suggest "brick" as a common element for building European roads. Here is one that I have done... I made the mast by first hand-pressing over 400 scale bricks into a clay base, then created a mold in RTV... I use it for roadway and for exposed ruined walls as well...
