Is the peice of metal that the skull on normaly there? And if not, hoe common is it for crews to add tie ons and other bits of added weilded stuff?

Yes, it is normally there. Not sure what it is used for though.

Yes it is normally there. Originally, the Abrams was designed to have a spot light mounted there, but with the advent of thermal imaging, it was not needed, nor was it ever used, but it is there if the crew wants to do something with it. Now, the hoffman device, a training aid used with miles gear, is mounted on the flat part of the mantlet just behind this.
