Started a church I've been itching to do.
The stained glass windows are from Michaels, as are the little cornice things at the top sides of the window casings, [ jewelry bits ].
Sorry I forgot to take a pic. of the window in the package, next update.

Keith, Goran, thanks. Yeah, now I've got three irons in the fire. I had to take the church idea out of my melon and put it up in foamboard before I lost the idea, ageheimers, l.o.l.
Took advantage of some stuff drying to take a pic. of the windows.

Great structure, love the overall shape. I think the columns need some size to balance the vertical appearance. Maybe some smaller round pieces on either side of the main vertical columns. Maybe some nice solid bases.

Great use of the Michaels windows

Hello Cheyenne, I want to see how this church grows. I think that the columns at every side of the window need a base, now she hangs in the air.
cheers

Thanks, Scott, Carlos, I just threw the windows in to see how they'll look.
This church is something I'll be building for myself,...... finally l.o.l.
There will be stone, block and/or brickwork all over the foamboard. The entire lower area under the windows and along the base/foundation will have strong looking stone or block, something like this.
Scott, how about some small round stringers along the main round column ?

Oï Glenn, nice to see you start another big project! Of course your steamer will have to wait I suppose
You are on for a great start apparently -but what kind of church is it? it doesn't look like a French one for sure!

Bingo, that's exactally what I was thinking. The 'weight' of the pillar balances the size. Nice.

Carpenter, Ship builder, now Stone Mason... is there no end to your disguises?

A nice idea, not many Churches are used in dioramas, but they are some of the best backgrounds, or indeed centrepieces, for an impressive diorama.

First off, my following observations are for North Western European, classical churches. If you are planning a more modern church, or a different area ( Southern Europe, the Mediteranian for example) then please ignore my ramblings..

I know that these are just the first steps, but I think it's best to throw in one observation right at the start. I think that the windows are to low. Most, if not all churches that I know have the windows start at least at some six feet above floor level. Also, and I see that you have already started this is some way, many churches are a hotch-potch of original building, with many additions, extensions, and alterations. Very rearly are churches trully simmetrical. This goes for windows as well, as often windows would have been donated (as in sponsored, paid for) by wealthy local people. (primarily to show off, and to buy a proverbial 'stairway to heaven'..) In such cases the room for such windows would have simply have been made were it was convinient, without much thought for architecture. Likewise, the very rich would add private chapels or crypts, which would be added with the stone, and architecture of the period. Considring that these churches where 'developed over centuries, the veriety of styles can be huge.

Cheers

Hi Jean, nope the steamer will get a dose of attention also ......... November 17th, last day of work ............ then I'm retired. The kids will be in school, the wife at work, and I get to run around the house naked playing with fireworks while drinking absinthe, ........I mean modeling.
Scott, yeah that does look better.
Henk, I've thought alot about the window casements and height, [ originally I was going to have them down to ground level ]. Estimating the fig at about 5'8" the actual window inside the casement is about 5' .
The church is to be south eastern European, although I like your mention of Med. or maybe even Italian.
Also your thoughts on the make up of the building itself, newer carved ornate granite/limestone casements and windows, added to older stone and brick walls etc. is what I'm going for, so keep an eye on this so it dosen't get to Hollywood, l.o.l.
The upper portion will have a stone/brick balcony along the short walls on both sides of the larger round column, with the church roof meeting the outer balcony wall.
Just describing this now to you makes me see it more of a Med., Roman/Greek/Moorish influence blend.

I see, more of a Greek-Orthodocs (sp) style of building. Domed roof, balcony type surround, sort of East meets West... I like it.

BTW, how will they get in...

Mike, thanks this one I'm building for a dio of my own so eventually she'll get painted up l.o.l.

Jean, I'll be retired after Nov. 17th so I'll have plenty of time to address all the projects both mine and the builds I have going for others.................. I hope.

Henk, I just realised I want British and American Allies in this so it's going to have to be Greco/Roman set in Italy somewhere.

Claude, how are you my friend ? After surfing church pics. this comes from no " one " ref. pic. but a morph of all the different elements I've seen in other pics.
