Hi there, are you meaning what is the difference between these Lavs? I know the NZLAV is the newer eight wheeled model i think its very similar to the Stryker in the US army , but it has a turret with a bushmaster gun. The Lav 25 is the older six wheeled model used by the Marines. The ASLAV is the Austrailian model of the Lav 25. Ive just been accepted into the New Zealand army so ive seen a few NZLAVs up close - much better than our old M113s.

I think you need to talk to LeoCmdr about the Canadian portion of your question.

'LeoCmdr" is away for a bit, but I think he checks in once in a while . Haven't heard of an ASLAV III yet, but an ASLAV phase III? perhaps you're thinking about? It's just an upgraded ASLAV I believe - which superficially looks like a LAV-25. PanzerMike - the LAV-25 is 8 wheeled. Between the Canadian LAV-III and the NZ LAV-III, I know the exhaust area is different (as you already found out, Miloslav) other than that, I'm not sure, they seem pretty close. We need some detail photos of a NZLAV-III - anybody?

The ASLAV
As you can see it has the older style hull based on the MOWAG Piranha series, they closely resemble the LAV-25 developed for the USMC.
The NZLAV-III
The NZLAV has the Stryker's exaust system, it's raised above the hull. The rest are LAV-III features, mounts for extra armour and of course the turret with the 25mm bushmaster chaingun.
The LAV-III
The Canadian LAV-III base for Stryker and NZLAV, it's exaust system is recessed and flush with the hull. It has extra armour mounted for improved protection and the 25mm gun in a rotating turret. They also have a rear bin for stowage.
So I hope that helps answer some basic questions about these vehicals.

Is the Canadian LAV turret the same as the one used on the Scimitar? Is the NZLAV different in this respect?
I was wonder why LeoCmdr was so quiet lately ;o)
Thanks

From what I can tell it is capable of mounting the additional armour but you don't put it on unless you need to, it can contribute to making the vehical unstable. The vehical is already top heavy and those armour plates don't help.

Hope I don't steal the question away from Jim but I think the turret on the LAV-III is the Delco Defense Turret and would be identical to the one mounted on the NZLAV. If I'm wrong about that I'd be pretty surprised, cause I'm 99% sure the turrets are identical.

Sorry guys not sure what i was thinking on the Six wheels - my bad One NZLAV i would love to model would be one of the ones with the dozer blade on the front , I sometimes see them cruising up the highway near my house. I see what they mean about them being top heavy as they are quite high.'LeoCmdr" is away for a bit, but I think he checks in once in a while . No prob Mike. Bill, yep Andrew has nailed it. Pretty much the same turret as the LAV-25 but with extra side bins, laser warning receiver, different mounts for the Leopard style smoke grenade launchers and a few other cosmetic details. Same turret as the Coyote too, although the LAV-III has the camera mounted above the co-ax.
I'm pretty sure all the LAV-III's within Canada are not fitted with the extra armour either. Makes it difficult to do a Canada-based model as all the Stryker kits have the applique armour molded on already. Would pretty much have to scratch a new hull.
Edit - one thing I noticed looking at the above photos - the NZLAV and ASLAV have the armoured covers for the turret sight 'doghouses'. I don't think they're used on the Canadian LAV-III.
Cheers,
Jim

Andrew/Jim thanks for the correction. I did a search for the Delco Defense Turret and found lots of information. Does anyone have two pictures that show one with and one without armour just so I can understand the difference? The picture you posted Jim are the bolts to facilitate the addition of the armour? Is there a space between the armour and the actual body of the vehicle?
Thanks guys
Bill

It's fairly simple to tell one of the pictures I posted was from Afghanistan where the additional armour has been bolted on and if you compare it to the picture of the NZLAV you will notice that those mounts stick out futher on it. Those little bolts that cover the front of the vehical are the mounts for the add-on plates, as Jim said they normally aren't attched in Canada. Usually it's because of the extra weight they add, nobody at CFB Gagetown is shooting at you with an RPG-7 so you just leave those plates behind.
Edit: Oh and Jim we don't use those armoured covers, I searched through every photo I can get of LAV-IIIs both in Canada and Afghanistan and I don't see any of them with those style armoured coverings ever.

Wow I like that with the limited slat armor would make for a cool build

Yeah you'd be able to scratch build slat armour and not go crazy in the process

I can see the difference around the lift points on the forward part of the hull.
Thanks

The ASLAV Phase III is obviously an update on the II - based around the U.S.M.C. LAV-25. I believe it has the ability to mount a RWS not too dis-similar to the U.S. Stryker's version, whereas the II doesn't.

G'day Shaun,
I think what you are trying to get at is:-
ASLAV-25 is a Type 1 Hull. Phase I,II and III.
ASLAV-PC is a Type 2 Hull. Phase I,II and III. Phase II had the pintal mount .50cal and so did the Phase III. However most of the cupolars were refitted to accomadate the RWS. Which has now been moved to a new mount over the engine deck.
ASLAV-F/R is a Type 3 Hull (but looks a lot like the Type 2) it also now has the new mount over the engine deck.
Cheers Jason
