Do y'all paint them while on the spruce or off and if off, how do you paint them (I mean, what do you mount them on)? Do you glue them to the figure first? (talking about 35 scale figures).

Im painting a fig as I type...I usually paint the major things(uniforms, faces) while on the sprue and then paint the details(buttons, eyes) when everything is together

Sladog, I asked that question myself and someone recommended taking them off the sprue and gluing a toothpick onto the side of the accessory that attaches to the figure and can't be seen. When it is dry, take the toothpick off and touch up that area.

I have started trying that out and it works alright - very time consuming though. I think others glue them right onto the body and paint as they go along. I am not good enough to do that yet.

I build the whole figure ------ minus his weapon and sometimes minus his liitle accessories on the back if they block areas. When the figure is built I mount it by drilling a 0,8mm hole through his foot bottom or knee (kneeling) or ass if he is sitting. Then I insert 0,7mm piano wire and superglue it in place. The paino wíre is usually 8 cm long. Then I stick this in something solid for holding.... a square of timber.
You never have to touch the figure after this.
When finished the wire can be cut off and leave 0,5mm for sticking into the ground/dio. Helps hold the figure in place. Some times i have cemented some straight sprue piece instead and used this instead of the wire!

I remove the accessories from the sprues, clean all of the mold lines and then mount them onto a toothpick with CA glue on a surface that will not show. Then I paint them. I find that this makes the whole process much easier. After paint is applied, I clip a pair of hemastats onto the toothpick so I can set the piece down to dry without having to worry about smudging the paint.
