A local farmer has this for sale about 5 minutes away. Does anyone know what it is exactly? M35? I can probably get more photos if anyone is interested.
Cheers,
Jim

Low headlamps and hard top say M35. M35 had a gas engine. M35A1s had diesel (multiy-fuel) engines. Both had exhaust out between rear tandems. The only way to really tell is by the ID tag (registration tag) in the cab. If it was built in the 50s or early 60s it's a M35. M35A1s were built in the 60s and about a 1000 lbs heavier than an M35. A 40+ year old truck could have been modified or rebuilt by civvy owner using parts from other trucks as this one looks in great shape. It could have been a M35 rebuilt into a M35A1. The key is the year it was built I guess. Does it have an air cleaner sticking out the right side? That says M35A1.

Hey Jungle Jim, Are ya goin to solve the puzzle? I did a bit of reading and found some interesting bits. Near as I can figure the base truck for all was an M44 chassis. From which was the single tired M34 mod. Then came the M35 model. On the headlamp position. Rule of thumb is low lamps no winch / high lamps with winch. At some point in M35 production high lamps were standardized for all M35 varients. But the M44 varients, like the M49 tanker retained low headlamps. Then it really gets confusing when you add in the short and long wheelbase trucks. Then those built for nato specs.
Now the truck in your picture. If the headlamps are origional the winch was added, therefore the need to add those additional headlamps. Then there is the problem of pprobably being ex Canadian army. The truck data plate should tell the truth. My guess is M44 or M35.

Jim, you going to replace the Dakota or the Caravan with this?
Think of the models we could haul to the Calgary show next year!

Thanks for the input Guys. Graeme, it would be good for hauling water too! Haven't had a chance to get back there and find more about it - even though I drive by it every day Hopefully this week sometime - before it snows again. Should be no problem getting the data plate info, if it's still there...

I can almost say for certain that it's a Canadian 5 ton gasser. 50's or 60's vintage.
cheers

Uh, not quite.
It's clearly an M35 (gasser) or M35A1 (multi-fuel) 2 1/2-ton. It will be interesting to see what Jim finds on its dataplate.

Why would it be painted in non-Canadian camouflage?

Mystery solved. According to the data plate it's a...drum roll please...
M185A3 (still a version of the M35 series though)
Which, according to Google, was a Shop Repair Van w/o winch. So somewhere along the line it got a winch installed.
Here's the other side
I talked to the guy selling it. $15,000 CDN, + if you want the brand new turbo diesel that's in the back container that's an extra $5,000.
Has a multi-fuel engine in it now apparently. I'll put up some more pics on my Webshots page later on.

Right Matt, I said that previously. Drop the winch or raise the lamps. At some point during M35A1 production the high lamps became standard for all M35 series trucks with or without a winch. Some exceptions possible.
