Royal marines sherman info needed
Posted: Thursday, November 01, 2007 - 08:10 AM UTC
Hi all,
I am planning to make a Royal Marines sherman as seen in Dennis Oliver`s book the british sherman tanks, on page 37.
I have the bison set of decals for the graduations around the turret, and am using the old DML M4A4 with a bit of TLC.
Any more info on this vehicle would be agreat help
cheers,
malc.

Hey Malcolm,
The old DML M4A4 kit has some dimensional problems.
The lower hull is too long and needs to be trimmed if you want to make it more accurate.
The turret has some issues too.
Here's a site that will help a bit:
http://mmcalc.tripod.com/Shermans/Model_FAQ/Modeling_the_M4A4-Firefly.html
I hope that helps.
Cheers

Hy Malcolm,
I started the same vehicle in 1:72 from Dragon. There is an another picture about FOX in the Imperial War museum photoarchives. B 5456 is the code number of this picture , You can find it on the IWM page.
I have some questions about the uniforms of the Royal Marines tank crews
Do You know anything about the insignia, the colour of the beret, etc?
Thanks in advance
Peter

Hi Guys
malcolm, sorry but I cant help with FOX other than the picture that Peter has reffered to.
The Royal Marines driving the tanks were ordinary marines so their berets were the same (coveted) green berets as still worn by the Royal Marine Commandos, here is a picture of one,
Also they would have obviuosly have had the same globe and laurel cap badge, not sure if they would have had the blue and red shoulder titles though, maybe someone else can clear this up. Also i think they just wore standard issue tank crew gear as issued to the rest of the British army. HTH, Nick

The colour of thier berets would be either Royal Navy Blue, or black, because at that time they were not commando`s and a lot of the crews along with the centour crews were supplied by the Royal Tank Corps, which have a black Beret.
hope this helps,
malc.

Thank you Malc!
Maybe one guy with green beret, and the other with black ...
What about the wading trunks and the waterproof covers? Do you want to use them on your model?
Brgds,
Peter

Hi guys
Malcolm and Peter, this is what Wikipedia is saying, however BBC WW2 peoples stories is saying this:
Therefore I should think that one black beret and one green beret could well be fine
If you want to read the rest of this guys story, it is quite interesting and can be read here

Throughout the war Royal Marines continued in their traditional role of providing ships detachments and manning a proportion of the guns on Cruisers and Capital Ships. They also provided the crew for the UK's Minor Landing Craft and the Royal Marines Armoured Support Group manned Centuar IV tanks on D Day one of these is still on display at Pegasus Bridge.

Hello Nick,
Thank you for Your help, and the very interesting story from the veteran RMASG member. I like this part of our hobby: to know something personal, the story of the real one.
Best regards
Peter

Hi Guys,
Yep, that sounds like the way to go, green and black beret.
I am lookint at putting some waterproofing around the gun mantlet, as the decals run out around the edge to where the waterproofing should be, as for wading truncks, Im not sure how they were fitted on to M4A4`s, and who does a set, I have a verlinden set, and I have the italeri kit of the M4A2 Marines version, in theory these should fit ??????
Once agian any comments /suggestions on this would be of great help.
cheers guys,
malc.
