I stumbled across this photo of an OIF Paladin...
What is this thing on the barrel? smoke dischargers?
Can anyone help me find more pictures of this thing, or at least give me its official name so I may search for it?

It looks like smoke dischargers. I think I've seen them before on a M1 Abrams, on a exercise, so maybe it's some sort of contraption used for training ??

Gary is all over it. It is a Hoffman Device fitted to a Paladin in training at the NTC (National Training Center) at Ft Irwin, CA. It is part of MILES (Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System) and gives a flash, bang, and smoke discharge to simulate the firing of the cannon.

Thanks for the quick answer, guys!
Another question - what would the grey rectangle above the beginning of the barrel be? And, how would I replicate the ring that's on the beginning of the barrel? It does not exist on the Revell 1:35 model... Will have to scratch build it.

The gray, rectangular box is a Chronograph, similar to a radar gun police use. It measures the muzzle velocity of the round as it exits the tube. This number is used in the firing solution to keep track of propellant lots and wear on the gun tube.
The silver ring can be replicated with some sheet styrene cut into a thin strip then glued onto the barrel.

Thanks Gino, I scratch built the entire M93 chronograph. I would upload pictures but my digital camera is broken will upload when I can.
