Jeff, over the years I have experimented with different mold making materials. A lot of it depends on what you are wanting to cast and how complex it is in shape as to what material I would use. A lot of info on the different materials out there can be found here http://www.smoothon.com This should help you. "Q"

I used plastillin bordered with Lego pieces to make my mould.

Simply roll out your plastillin (not the self hardening stuff) , push your wanted patern in with whatever you want, delimit it with Lego pieces and pour your plaster or casting powder (it's harder then plaster).
I made the whole walls of my castle like this(look under my profil , the threads with "Clervaux" in the title)

Cheers
Claude

I use Alumalite RTV rubber for all my molds. It is an easy two-part mix that comes with premeasured cups to make it simple. It works well every time. It is relatively cheap as well. You can get it for about $30 for a 16 oz set at Hobby Lobby. The 16 oz will make aquite a few molds too, depending on their size.

Good luck.

Another option is RTV molds - two part mold making rubber material you can get on line from Micromark (there are other locations and brands)

I also use Alumalite two-part resin. It is a 1:1 mix ratio and sets up hard in about 10 minutes. It works great as well. Also available at Hobby Lobby and other places.
