Sometimes you might have luck at a craft store or Wal-Mart, but most of the time your name brand hobby paints runn between $2 and $3 per bottle. One thing you can do if money is an issue is to build up your collection slowly. Maybe set aside $10 from your paycheck each week to buy a few bottles of paint. In a few months you'll have a good sized collection. You don't have to buy everything at once. I've been doing this for a while and still am buying tools as the need arises.

That is good advice.
I restarted the hobby about 6 monthes ago and I pick up a tube here and bottle there and my collection of paints is pretty complete now.
Totally agree with the advice about craft acrlycs like Apple Barrell. My local craft shop has a huge selection and cheap - $.99. Work very well on figs.

try buying house paints or asking from carpenters or people who are into painting, just make sure that you know what color your getting and and if if your getting enamel or acrylic. i buy paint by the quart and just mix them whenever i have to. a picture or a color guide does come in handy. grays are easy to mix, greens and olive drabs are rather tricky. some flat base would also be necessary at times.

I even buy acrylics at the dollar store. A buck a bottle and have used them on figures, armour and scenery. I sometimes have to give an extra coat or so, but the bottles are bigger than hobby shop paint.

Craft paint would be a good start because it is easy to use, wide varitey colors, easy to clean up, and best of all it is inexpensive (1oz. = $.98 vs. 1/2oz = $2.59 for model master). When mixed with water at the proper proportions it craft paints can be airbruhed. The only down side is lack of dedicated military colors, however with the wide selction of colors and the fact that the pigments are easily mixed, so with fewer colors you can have a greater range by mixing the colors together. I have used craft paints to do Russian armor with an airbrush. I mainly use craft paints for doing figures.
