Posted: Wednesday, November 28, 2007 - 01:32 AM UTC
Hi all,
its been a long slog, but finally I got there
here are some photos of a Royal marines sherman, just after D Day,( 17 th i think the date said ) it is based on a photos in the book by Dennis oliver the british sherman.
the model is the old DML M4A4, with a little bit of TLC, the turret is a resin item, the crew have been chopped and changed from a LVT crew, to tank crew/royal marines, and the decals are a Bison set for british shermy`s
All comments both good and bad always welcome
thanks for looking,
malc.

Hi Malc.
This one is fantastic!
Like i said before, i would lke to build this one myself.
This is a great inspiration for me.
BTW, wy are the driver and co-driver wearing mark II helmets and no tank helmets!?
In the picture i know of this tank the driver wears a tank beret just like the tank commander!?
Not that i am saying that you have to be historicly correct, but i am just curious.
Besides my nitpicking i hope you're gonna show us more high quality builds like this in the future. Looking forward to it.
Happy modeling
Frank.

Malcolm: Fantastic looking build! Great decal work with the numbers on the turret. I assume this is the Bison decal sheet?
Three items caught my attention: 1) the drivers' helmets -- I've never seen crew in those positions use them like Frank said. 2) the air-cooled .50cal barrel -- is this in the photo? It would be a very rare battlefield item for sure. 3) on the tail lights, only the top left oval was red. the lower left lens and both right ones would have appeared black.

I like it. Somebody please explain the numbers on the turret for me. I have tried to find this out from some friends but I get about a half dozen different answers Once again, nice build. "Q"

Good work. Very impressive looking.
Probably too late to change the helmets now. I have seen one shot of a crewman wearing the infantry helmet, it was I think in "The British Soldier 2" I'll look for it when I get the chance.

Very nice work! How did the degree marking decals go on?

Hi Malcolm,
Great work on the kit, it's turned out really well. Would agree about the helmets and tail lights.
Your fire extinguishers look red. I've seen orange on some of the vehicles in the IWM but mostly a rich deep gloss green colour.
Excellent stuff.

Lovely build! The helmets stand out as a bit odd though. I'd have thought they'd have been wearing the rimless armoured ones. Aside from that top work

Great job. The tank looks great. I am also curious about the degree markings. What are they for? As for the helmets, I have seen American crews wearing infantry helmets and I have seen a couple pictures of British crews from Normandy wearing them.

Hello Malcolm!
Nice model, congratulations
That's how I imagine FOX, it's a great inspiration to see it completed. And an evidence to me, I choose a good scheme
My small Sherman is still in progress, waiting for the crew from AB Figures (nearly impossible to me to buy 'em here in Hungary). I already modified the idler wheel, and some experiments are on the way to make cast numbers like those on M4A4s.
The turret is nearly completed, and the updating of the hull is already started.
Thanks for inspiration
Cheers, Peter

Hi Frank,
thanks for your comments, the two front figures are there for the photos only, the reason is I ran out of mulliput, when I can get down the shop, the heads will be replaced, with berets
cheers mate,
malc.

Hi Roy,
thanks for the info on the lights, the figures are there for the photos only, when I get some more mulliput, they will end up with berets, and the barrel of the .50 cal, looking at the photo in the book, I cant see a carry / barrel change handle on on the barrel, plus there are holes in the sleeve of the barrel, so I thought it may be the ground mounted type, as british shermans dont normally have the 50 cal fitted.
many thanks for all your comments, means a lot coming from you,
cheers mate,
malc.

Hi Matt,
the marking around the turret are aiming marks, so ground infantry can call out a bearing reading the graduations on the turret for the crews to fire at, if that makes sense!!

malc.

Hi Ales,

Hi Alan,
the two front crew are only there for the photo, when I get some more mulliput they will get thier berets, many thanks for the tail lights, I put a post up a while back about the colour of the extingishers, the response was 50/50 green red, so i went for the red, to add that little bit of colour
cheers mate,
malc.

Hi Mike,
the graduations around the turret are for infantry to set a bearing for the tankers for somthing to shoot at, if this makes sense
cheers mate,
malc.

I was wondering the same thing. I found this explanation on a site selling a dicast model of an RM Centaur:
"The white degree markings around the turret made it possible for shipboard spotters using binoculars to align the 95mm Howitzer with a target even if it was obscured by dense smoke."
