Found this on Flickr. Anyone have any idea what its for and why the wheels? I had a closer look on Photoshop and the wheels look a bit suspicious could be a good touch up.

It is a Maintenance Contact Team HMMWV. No idea why it has M113 roadwheels on it. They look genuine to me though. The height of the chassis is lower than a normal HMMWV. Also look at the right front wheel, just under the bumper, it is a roadwheel too.

in a way it does look photoshopped.......... but it's a good one if it is. figuring it's going to stay on pavement the "hard" tires" are a option........ Maybe there's a shortage of HMMWV tires over there....................

It looks so low because its only the road wheels, the hummers tires are 36 inch tires so its going to drop it pretty low. Looks like someone might have a bit too much time on their hands.

That was my point when I said, "The height of the chassis is lower than a normal HMMWV."

Here is a close up
What worries me about this image is the light source and the direction of the shadows. The light is coming from a flash reflected on the water bottle and the hub of the M113 (good call Arty) and the shadows are coming from what looks like a large open garage door. There should be two shadows or the flash should have over powered the natural light.
The black colour of the bumper and the wheels is a higher contrast than the actual HMMWV. Look at the sharpness of the outer wheel compared to the under wheel well contrast....I think this is a ruse, well done but a fake.
This vehicle could only be used on highways or skating rinks. The angle of approach and the clearance has been reduced to that of a Honda Civic.

The vehicle would almost have to be used indoors. It would have trouble negotiating a gravel parking lot.

I think some mechanics just had too much time on thier hands. If you look at the pic above, the center hub is a HMMWV hub, not an M113 hub. If it were photo-shopped, it would still be on an M113 hub. As to the sharpness of the bumper, it is just clean. Under the wheel well and frame look really dirty to me.

Boggie what you can do is email the guy who posted the photo...there should be a name and see what you can do from there. Maybe he can give some insight to the photo.

Its probably real. I generally go by occam's razor when it comes to images like this. Its simple enought that it is probably real. But very unusual for sure.

I am surprised some of you guys have never seen this before. I have seen this done a few times and its just for fun. The road wheels from a M113 have the same bolt patern as those of a HMMWV. This picture is not photoshoped, but just one of some guys having a good time and some fun with their humvee. However you cannot drive the vehicle with the roadwheels on because it will cause damage to the humvee hubs. I saw it and had to laugh some mechanics in Korea did the same thing to the HHC 1SG at final formation on a Friday.

I see that it is the HMMWV hub, but why did it get painted to match the M113 roadwheel?
I was originally thinking that the roadwheels were used to clear under the rollup doorframe due to the extra height on the boxes on the shelter. But as evidenced by the FMTV in the back, that is not the case.

Again, mechanics with too much time on thier hands and a can of spray paint. Believe it or not, this kind of "practical joke" happens all the time in the military.

Somewhere out there, somebody probably said, "You know what will drive those model guys crazy?"

Totally agree, someone is not visiting the motor pool on a daily basis and walking around...it is funny though. I would support that some 1SG or Co Cdr was departing and the boys decided to have a little fun with him. Or, they knew no one ever visited the motor pool so they altered the wheels and parked it on line....probably still there
God love Soldiers.

I think it is remarkable that the exact M113 wheels have the same bolt pattern as a HMMWV wheel and some of you actually knew that. Time for confession, have any of you actually done this?

I've never done this, seen it done, the only mixing and matching I've done is M88 road wheels on an M1A1

1/35 may have to wait.
I want to eventually do one in 1/24 with a scratchbuilt Doshka.
At any rate, I had my evil minions working all night to build me a Hi-Lux with HMMWV tires on it.
They were not up to the task.
Instead, they did two, just to give us more modeling options.
One is called "the Big Ridiculous." I don't know if the other has a name. I can't even tell them apart most of the time.
