After scouring the M4A1 Group Build thread, and trying to use the site's search engine (waited a few minutes and gave up), I am posting my question here:

I realize that there were two types of air cleaners on the Sherman. The Italeri kit comes with the box type, but in an article I read recently on "fixing the Sherman", the author mentioned replacing the INCORRECT air cleaners with ones from the Verlinden update set.

Now, my question: Like the roadwheels, track, etc are the air cleaners interchangeable? I plan on modeling an M4A1 (76) 3rd Armored Div in the fall of '44. Should I replace the air cleaners?

Thanks,
Kencelot

Kevin, the air cleaners are wrong. The M4A1's (76mm) used the more square shaped air cleaners than the rounded ones provided in the kit. You do not have to use Verlindens per se, any squared set from another kit will also do.

Go here: Italeri M4A1 , the author - Tim Streeter, did a nice job on the things needed to make a corrected kit.

Actually, that is the article I had seen and mentioned in my earlier post...

you can get the correct air cleaners from either of the two recent-issue Tamiya M4A3 kits (75mm and 105mm kits with the extra Infantrymen). They come as extra, unused parts on the accessory sprues of these kits (they are used in the Tamiya M4).

You might want t post a "want ad" in the flea market forum and work out a part swap with someone.

Thanks all!
Having been exposed to the virus that causes Shermaholicism, I will definitely take the easy way and pick up one of those newer Tamiya kits.

BTW...
I built an Italeri M7 Priest about 15 years ago and seem to remember that kit having both types of air cleaners. I broke the kit up a few years ago (not for spares, but ended up with a bunch of junk in my parts box). Anyone know if I am remembering incorrectly?

Thanks again,

No, I think it only came with the one kind of air cleaner -- the same wrong one in the M4A1 kit.

Welcome to the wild world of Shermanology.

Now, that's cleared up, so here is a related Italeri M4 series question.

Are the air cleaners provided with the Italeri Priest M7, kit #801, incorrect? If so, can the Tamiya spares be used to replace them.

I guess so. I'm willing to bet (since I don't have it onhand) that the parts in question are common to both Italeri kits, seeing as how kit mfgs like to resuse sprues on similar kits.
