You can buy pre-made pine bases at Michaels. Different sizes are available. They're in the plaque section.
Or, you can make them by buying scrap plywood in different sizes at Home Depot and buy molding and glue it to the edges.

Another easy way is to use a wooden picture frame. Take out the glass and fill with a scrap piece of wood and you're done. Build up from there.
I also use cheap MDF/shelving material as the base, then when I'm done I add decorative trim around the outside making a nice finish.

My wife is addicted to garage sales and thrift stores. You can find some pretty wild, ornate picture frames, old models and other assorted junk that my be aplicable to modeling.

Oh and Steve has the best solution, I've found thousands of modeling " things ' at Michaels. From jewelry bits for making ornate lamps, planters, building cornices etc. to ground cover, balsa & basswood, the list is endless !!!!

Try Goodwill - They usually have award plaques & such that can make excellent bases. They are CHEAP and high quality. You'll have to be carefull about non-hard wood plaques as they tend to warp.

And if you want to go the DIY way you can buy some nice wood and cut it to the size you want and route a nice edge on it. little more complicated but looks really nice.
