Greetings all,

I am currently about to begin a sci-fi project, where I'll be converting a mobile suit into a Russian Mech (in a scenario where the Cold War did not end and it is still Nato vs Warsaw Pact, with mechs instead of tanks). I want the mech to look interesting, so I am looking for different alternatives other rather than the plain Russian armor green. I also don't want to go for a light-dark brown combination as used in Afghanistan, as I am saving that for another mech. What would you suggest? Which colors could I use?

For ideas, the mech that I'll build is actually is "Scopedog" from the Votom series, here's a pic:

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

While I do love the Flanker colors, I want to paint this model in a more ground forces way, since compared to gundams and stuff it doesn't have any booster/blaster/whatever packs to allow it to fly. So I'd like more greenish-brownish stuff.

Boris, any urban camouflage patterns and colors you could recommend?

How about doing something like this, a Chieftain Mk 10 of the Berlin Brigade. Colours I imagine would be easy to copy.

this looks nice, although might need a bit of tweaking to look right on a vehicle (looks too uniform-ish) Its urban and yet still gives u a bit of an escape from just black and gray

looks through the various pictures and maybe you can pick something. Plenty of stuff like woodland, winter etc. May also need tweaking since they dont look like the style of camo put on vehicles. But since a mech is just an oversized person kinda who knows.

Or you can pretend it has a cloaking system and paint it any cool scheme you wish..........lots of red.

That mech you posted reminds me alot of the Soviet tesla troopers from Red Alert 2

maybe some inspiration

I think you would get some idea for the paintjob by browsing through this thread . Beware though, it's 367 pages long, full of photos and video.
Hope it helps.

Hi there,

I think you might find some inspiration looking through a Warhammer catalogue. There should be some interesting/original urban camo patterns in there.

This looks to be an interesting build - good luck.

Hey Emri.

Funnily enough, i'm working on a diorama what if, similar to your idea.

I have this site in my favourites, It's got tones of camo patterns.

Thanks for the replies people. Some very creative and inspring ideas coming up.

I think I have decided on what to do. Now, this mech stands over 5 meters tall, so applying camouflage used on uniforms might not help much. I think I'll go with the colors on Mi-24 Hind or Mi-8 helicopters, green with khaki-brown-greenish color. Unfortunately, I don't know exactly what those colors are (green is easy but the other color looks different in every photo).

However, the uniform camouflage colors were too attractive to pass up. Now, this mech also comes with a 1/20 scale pilot figure. Normally, he wears a bright orange suit in the series, but times are hard and what if he needs to ditch the mech and make it back home on foot? I think I'll try an urban or woodland camo on him using a hand brush. Hope I don't mess it up.

Thanks for the ideas again. George, that forum you linked is amazing, a heaven for Russian vehicles.

Ah, by the way, do you think it would be appropriate to post the construction of this model over here? I know it's more sci-fi(Modelgeek), but since I'm trying to build a "Prolonged" Cold War subject and a mobile combat mech is more or less an armored fighting vehicle... would it qualify?

Now, all I need to do is find out what the colors on the Mi-24 Hind or Mi-8 are.

Emre, I had the same thought and I did the same type build several years ago using the Federation Trade tank from Star Wars in a what if situation. The colors I used were Soviet Sand, Warsaw Pact Gray Green, and a generic dark gray. Not sure if it will help, but here's what the final product looked like. Maybe it'll give you some ideas. "Q"
ps. Copius amounts of scratch building went into this one.

Looks good, the heli camo should look pretty nice, I just thought you may have wanted to go even more exotic than that.
You can put the build thread in the "What If " section in the Armor/AFV forum

Thats a really nice tank there Red.

A-ha! Matthew, that's one exotic tank as stated and that grey-green looks like the color I am searching for! Which brand and what number is that color?

logically it's not an urban camo... Speznas still use it even though in a newer form which is called Berezka/ Bekas.

yellow green (Tamiya XF-4 + Buff maybe) as base color and olive green (Tamiya XF-58) or NATO green. That is my suggestion for the Mi-24 camo.

Emre, The color is Warpac Gray Green, FS34258 by Floquil under their military line. Not sure if it is still around, but thats the info. Glad the tank helped you somewhat. Good luck with your build. "Q"
