While doing some research a little while back I came across a very interesting AFV.......
During the early part of the German invasion of Russia, 10 Pak 97/38 barrels with shields were experimentally mounted on the Soviet T-26 light tank chassis, resulting in vehicles designated 7,5 сm Pak 97/38(f) auf beute Pz.T-26 (r).
This was a very interesting subject as the gun's themselves were old French WW1 guns captured earlier in the war mounted on a Pak 38 carriage. These were developed as the need arrose for a higher calibre field gun when faced with the thick armour of Russian KV and T34 tanks.
To mount them on the almost obsolete Russian T-26 light tank chassis was to create a basic SPG that was almost entirely made from captured equipment, though from the opposite ends of Europe.
Few pictures or details of this interesting AFV exist, although the most photographed also sports an interesting and unusal camouflage scheme to add to the vehicles already interesting character, seemingly photographed at a display of German armour somewhere during the war:
And here is a colour plate from an unknown source:
With such an interesting subject identified and an old badly-built 1/35 Mirage T-26 sitting at home, the decision was made to have a go at modelling this unique SPG.

First up was to strip off the paint from my T26 (Mr. muscle to the rescue!), then to strip down the chassis as bare as possible to allow me to start the conversion.
Here it looks a real mess, and I must say I became a bit disheartened at this point, especially as I managed to snap the right fender during the destructive process!

Next up was to aquire the bits neccesary for the conversion. As I already had the base kit I decided to keep my spending to a minimum, and so just bought 2 kits to help me along the way.
First up was Italeri's 'new' kit of the Pak 97/38:
(Incidentaly, I did a review of this kit for the site which can be seen HERE if anyone is interested in the kit.)
The other kit was Eduard's PE for Italeri's T-26 that I figured should work for my version.
Everything else came from the spare's bin or from another old Mirage T-26 that I stripped down for the greater good of this conversion.

The Pak 97/38 was detailed with spare PE from an Aber Pak 40 set, and a DML Pak 40 sight, the shield extensions were from plastic card and gun supports and wires were added using copper wire.
You may notice the extra shell ejection shield on the right hand side of the breech. I am not 100% sure about it's purpose as it was not present on standard Pak 97/38's though it is probably due to the left hand sheild being designed for the 50mm Pak 38 and the french 'cannone de 1897' renowned for having a vicious recoil. With the limited space on the back of the T26 it was probably decided to add the field mod to prevent injury to the gun crews.
Anyway, here are pictures of two other SPG's with the extra sheild being visible:
Note the Balkankreuz on the rear glacis (which appears to be devoid of the hooks etc. usually seen on the back of T26's in Russian service) and the additional armour sheild's added to the SPG in the second picture.

My spare T26 and the Eduard PE did the bulk of the work of the chassis, with a spade and gun cleaning rods from Tamiya's good old Panzer 4 equipment set.
The main additions were the spare track hanger, simply made from a strip of spare PE, and the far more complex gun travel lock, using again, spare PE and some plastic rod of the correct shape.

And now a walk around of the completed build:
You can see that I stayed with the original rubber band Mirage tracks, which although horrible, kept my wallet happy as the alternative fruli's were not cheap and far to time consuming for this build!
My other major cop-out was throwing a 'tarpaulin' (tissue paper and PVA glue) over the hole under the gun which would have otherwise meant scratch building an interior that I did not have the time or patience for (this was supposed to be a quick build)!

Fortunately, this little SPG, just about fits onto Mig's 'Panzer 1 Afrika Korps' plaster base after removing the Pz 1 track ruts:
The barrels for the base and my crewman during painting:
He is a Tamiya figure with a Verlinden Resin head.
Thats all for now folks i'm afraid, I will do my best to photograph the final peice tonight and get the pics up tomorrow (it's all painted and finished now).
In the meantime i'd apprecaite all comments and feedback on what i've posted so far!
Thanks for looking and hope all the pics didnt take too long to download!

Very nice work on a very interesting little SPG. The whole idea behind your build is very interesting, and inspirational to those of us who haven't taken that step away from OOB or AM conversion sets. I await the rest of the photos on this project, again nicely done

Having seen pictures of this mix-and-match vehicle before, always wondered what it would take to bash one together. Looks like you've done the trick with this one James.

Very interesting build James, and one that I dont think I've seen done before, actually I'm not sure I've even seen this vehicle before.
Great bit of recycling too.

Nice background and build up posting. Looking forward to the paint scheme you're going to be putting on it. Would be curious how you would apply the unique camo scheme, if you're going to portray the one in your first photo. Thanks for sharing your work!

Hi guys, thanks for all the comments!
Thanks Bill, it wasn't too difficult a conversion to be honest but was fun and relatively quick (though im a slow builder!)
No references on this one then mate! lol. Thanks, the Mirage base kit did take a bit of polishing to come up nice, but I think it came out ok.
No worries Ron, it is a very interesting SPG, particularly if you like the wierd and wonderful. Please do use these as inspiration, i'd love to see your take on this subject at some point!
Thanks Tim, usually i'd post as I build, but for some reason I've been very slack at posting my work lately, had a big photo shoot last night though so expect a few posts in the near future! Yes I am modelling the vehicle in the first two pics due to the interesting camo, and have tried to stay as true to form as I could. I'll give you a run thorugh on how I did the camouflage when I post the pics.
Thanks,
James

Ok guys, here is a 'walk around' of my finished '7,5 сm Pak 97/38(f) auf beute Pz.T-26 (r)':
And one from above:
Tim asked about Painting, so i'll say a bit about how I finished this build;
Base coat was Tamiya Panzer Yellow (XF-60) sprayed on, I then used humbrol enamels no. 30 for the camouflage which was brush painted on (which took a long time!) as from the reference pics this appears to be how it was done on the real thing. Chips were added using a cream colour (a revell enamel- not sure which) and humbrol brown bess (now discontinued unfortunately), and all other details were painted with enamels. Finally windsor and newton oil paints were used for washes, burnt umber all over and pin washes with black.
Weathering was done with a wash of humbrol 29, misting of the ground colour with the airbrush and mig pigments.
The tracks were painted using Tamiya acryilics based on observations of the tracks of the mine vehicles where I work, this is essentially a mix of browns and gun metal which were sprayed onto the tracks while seperate.
The base is from Mig (as mentioned) and was sprayed with Tamiya acyrilics; firstly with black and then clear gloss for the edge, then a mix of browns and tan for the earth. Individual rocks were painted using enamels, before adding white glue and sprinkling on the static grass. When the fuel drums etc. were added (also painted with enamels) I then used the airbrush to mist the base with the same earth colour and finally added a wash of humbrol 29.
The maps tucked in next to the gun breech were printed from the PC from shrunk real maps, and the shells came with the Italeri Pak 97/38.
Think thats everything, if you have any questions then feel free to ask away!
Hope you like, i'll post some detail shots next......

As mentioned some detail shots:
The last one shows my terrible attempt at replicating the sign you see in the very first reference pic, unfortunately my painting skills were not up to scratch (I should have done something on the PC!) but the idea was to tie it into the reference pics while also acting asthe model 'plaque'.
Once again, hope you like what you see, this was a fun little project which kept me entertained throughout (except for the gun travel lock ) and I would recommend trying something different like this to everyone.
Thanks for looking and i'd really appreciate your feedback.
Cheers,
James

LOL, no mate, this one must have slipped under the radar somehow....

How dare you mock my figure painting skills!
No the iris's are there mate, (in the final pics, not the one of him on the toothpick), I use gun metal for them to give the eyes a bit of 'sparkle' to add some life to the figure, but unfortunately this doesn't photograph well as it reflects some of the light.
Thanks for the kind words, I am very pleased with how this turned out, the camo was labourious and difficult when involving corners etc. (the barrel was a real pain in the ass) but different to the norm, making this build that bit more unique!

Easy now, don't hold your breath for that one!
I've got to finish this KT i'm working on, and as I made the bold/stupid decision to scratch build an interior it won't be finished any time soon!
Then there's my Maus for the idea experiments campaign, i'm uber-detailing that so that won't be quick!
Then I fancied building up a Flak 38 from my DML spares and that Tamiya kit you sold me, and putting it with some falschirmjager in africa/sicilly.
Theres my Tiger mid with interior too, a Pak 40 with some Brits, my Bradley, a T-34 Chtz, Russian 45mm field gun etc. etc.
I still havn't even finished that RSO I was building!
Somewhere in there my PJW will be built I promise, it may be about June though!
Let me know if you're going to start yours at any point and I may just pull my finger out to beat you too it!
