Bill Plunk (wbill76) takes a look at DML's previously released 1/35 kit# 6363 Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf G Kharkov 1943.

While the kit's been out for a while, we were actually missing this one in our list of Reviews. I'll be putting up a build log here in the next couple of weeks once the 250 Neu is finished.

Thanks Mark, I've been wanting to get to this one for a little while but other things kept intruding. Since DML made the switch from "Super" to "Smart" for the Pz IV series, I've been looking forward to building one to see how they compare in terms of build effort.

Thanks for the review, Bill. The PE looks very manageable, though I kind of liked the separate wheels and tires. I like Dragons Pz IV's, so will be looking forward to the build log

I'm building the Panzer IV Ausf G. I'm in the painting stage now and it is a very good kit. I'm also putting the tracks together now and this is my first time to build this kind of tracks. It's great. Easy to put together. Some assemblies dont need cement as the fit is fantastic. I did it with the space armor. My main problem now is will it be panzer grey or dark yellow?

James,

I too liked the separate rubber rims but understand why they chose to integrate them back in. On the one hand it made painting the rubber portion easier, but more care had to be taken with the actual hubs to avoid paint buildup on the mating surfaces resulting in the tires splitting when fitted. Catch-22 I guess.

Noli,

Good to hear. The general consensus seems to be that this is one of those kits with very few areas to watch out for, I'm looking forward to building it. One thing that I noticed as an interesting innovation on the decal marking sheet was the fact that the "totenkopf" emblem for the one Panzer Gray scheme has the white skull and black outlines as separate decals for overlaying on each other to produce the single marking. A neat trick IMHO similar to the "number jungle" style of license plates approach in other kits.

Thanks Tomaso, I've been getting the bench cleared in anticipation of building this one...ought to be able to start it soon.

Nice review Bill. I've been eyeing that kit at my LHS ( I also have the Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. G released last year. )

Looking forward to your build!

Scott, Jim, appreciate the comments. I actually started work on this one (barely) while watching the NFL games last Sunday...perfect setting for cleaning up the many road wheels.

Can vouch it is a great kit bought it last week at the LHS sale of 20%.

Dragon has been kicking some great kits out lately just wish they would do some soft skins.

Like The RSO, Maultier,Opel Maultier Panzerwerfer 42, Opel Blitz, and artillery like the Russian 203 MM.

Thanks for the write up Bill.

Jeff, Carl,

I've heard positive things from many about this one and am really looking forward to it. Haven't settled yet on a scheme/options just yet but will soon enough. Ironically this will be the first "Smart Kit" that I've built...got several in the stash, but this is the first one with that designation that I will have actually cross the bench.

Wish you luck will be a little longer then a Tamiya Build but what I have seen done builds into a great model.

PS
Are you going to use the Kit decals or something else like Echelon or Archer?
These here

Jeff,

I've got a set of Bison decals for the IV in Afrika...haven't set my mind on whether or not I want to go with one of the kit options are use those. If I go with the kit options, I'll likely do it in a whitewash finish.
