What is my email address used for? Also, when I change my email address using the feature under the "my account" tab, do I get a confirmation of the change?

Your email address is there for, well, to email you...and to prove you're a real person when you register.

If you can't login and need to reset your password, it will go to this email. Also if you subscribe to forums or topics the emails for those go to this email. Basically Bill got it right though. It proves you are a real person and not some kind of automated-bot.
