Can someone give me a few pointers on a quick method for painting faces? I am aware of the bannerman method but i am looking for a process that is not performed over several days.
I am using Vallero acrylics but they do not blend as well as oils do. Vallero is great for clothing but not so great on skintones with shadows and highlights. THANKS!!!!!

Are you thinning them properly? See the tutorial under Miniature and model colorhere. Take a look in "My photos for examples of what can be done.
You need to use well thinned shadow and highlight coats to get a blended effect.

Vallero acrylics do not blend the way oils do.
Try to thin the colors (5 parts water - 1part color) in order to have shadows and highlights, as step one.

I have a detailed description of Jaume Ortiz method of painting faces with Vallejo (in PDF format)

I would be happy to send you a copy by mail.

If you are looking for a quick - but great looking - methode, maybe try this:

Hi, you can always try Vallejo's retarder to extend drying times, but I'd start with a base of Light Flesh mixed with Sandy Brown from their model air range... it's pre thinned so in only small proportional amounts added to the Light Flesh, shades from highlights to deep shadow can be achieved. With the addition to that of Vallejo's thinner and retarder, the paint remains smooth and easy to blend and apply, but it will never be as easy to blend as oil paint. Oil paint gives a more "flesh-like" lustre, but it's harder to mix the shades correctly. I've seen fantastic results from oils and acrylics: I guess the best tecnique to use in either case is practice!

Color me what!
When using acrylics you layer the paint, with oils you blend the paint. Your best bet is to go to this site where some of the best figure painters in the world toss words at one another.

In order to want to paint figures you will need to set armor modeling aside for a good 6 months to a year, painting figures are real hit and miss at times, I have been playing with them for 40 years and still suck at times. Good luck.

Thanks to all that gave input. Your responses to this one topic have given me more information than I have gained in several weeks of searching the net.

These are some great tips, but I like to have book or two I can instantly reference when I'm painting. Is there are any consenus on what the top figure painting books are? Kind of like how Mig's FAQ book is on of the best for AFV painting, and Shep Paine's stuff is great for dioramas, what would you guys recommend for figure painting.

I would say this book by Calvin Tan is by far the best I have seen for SBS figure painting in acrylic.

hello
this is my very quick and easy method for painting faces/flesh
1. paint the body part vallejo 021 medium fleshtone
2. apply a wash of mig 502 abteilung 080 wash brown(let this fully dry).
3. dry brush using vallejo 017 basic skintone.
4. paint the eye ball using vallejo 006 light flesh.
5. for the pupil i use an ultra fine pilot super color marker.
this method wont win any competitions but it does give good skin tones in 1/35

good luck

Neil-- now I like you method. It is nice and simple and provides the results that will allow me to put a decent model on the shelf. I am going to try it tonight.
Let you know the results
thanks

" How To Paint Realistic Military Figures" by Lynn Kessler. AMPS Master, best friend of mine, and an excellent figure painter. He uses acrylics.
