Finished this dio about 6 months ago. I usually build models as cheaply as possible. Keeps the misses tolerant of the hobby. The tree is the first one I've ever done. enjoy!! http://community.webshots.com/user/albcasummit

SFC,

I like your idea to your diorama, the tree is nice! Did you made it of a sort of spice (like oregano), I have seen a few trees like that, that are made with spices.

But I think that your diorama is too "light", I think that the figures don't fit in to the enviroment. It is too much green, I think. The mud is too light also, I think.

Easy - My kit (and I believe SFC's too) came from Tamiya. The kit has 8 figures in it, a motor team, 30 cal team, 50 cal AA guy, and bazooka team.

Well-done figures and I LOVE the pile of "pills" beneath the tripod.... so many folks forget little details like this.

The only thing I'm NOT crazy about - it looks like you used those darn rigid Tamiya sandbags that are stiff and un-natural... Looks like they are all the same shape and you have added perhaps some clay to cover the gaps?

I now cast my own bags (see image below). They look nice, have great individual "sag" and shape, and best of all - you can link the ends together almost seamlessly to make as long of a wall as you need... only drawback is you need to cut em carefully to adjust the height (this wall is about 4 scale feel high) or if you want to create a corner. I sell these on my website as well... (shameless plug!)

.

You can see them used in the "captain winter" Russian diorama here online in the gallery-?>dioramas->allies section

Keith - on my diorama with the sandbags - that was the first and last time I used the Tamiya bags. I actually used a candle and heated the bags up and 'mashed' them together to get custom fittings. The one on the right is was heated in the middle and bent to about 45 degrees. I agree, they look stiff. I like yours much better.

SFC - how did you build that tree?

slodder,
The tree is from a kit that I got from a lot sale on E-bay. It came with three pewter trees. I shaped the tree uses one in my backyard as a model. the foliage is a foam product I got here in germany at the local hobby shop. Not sure of the brand. Anyway, the foam material can be stretched out. I just stetched it out and white glued it down in layers. The stretching also causes little bits to fall off. after I had the tree layered I glued these bits to it in irregular patches. Lastly after the white glue had dried I gave the tree a good soaking with my wifes hair spray to stiffen it up and keep it from shedding. the faom material comes in different colors. I used two. I beleive I got the foam in the railroad department.

They are $8.00 for two sections(plus shipping) which equates to about 7 inches total)... just as shown exactly in the Russian Dio above. To order, go to the site

www.scalemilitary.com and click on the ONLINE CATALOG LINK... the item is # 3531BAGS. Click on the photo to see an enlargement, then ADD TO CART to actually order. These are also available in Resin for $14.00, but honestly - i think the plaster units paint more realisically....
