Been working on Trumpeter"s LAV-25 for far longer than I care to admit. Any pointers on latest mods for OIF vehicles? My photo searches on the web seem to indicate a variety of muffler shields for instance. Were any LAVs painted sand? All I find are NATO patterns almost completly covered in dust. Also, any idea where to get a spare tire without buying 8 extras? Maybe I'll get this done in 2008. Thanks in advance.

You need to make yourself familiar with the LAV SLEP (Service Life Extension Program)....this will explain and show you the mods and upgrades that have been done on the LAV 25.

Yes there were tan LAV 25s during OIF....don't know if any still serving there are still painted tan.

If you are building the LAV 25 with the latest SLEP mods you should probably be looking at changing out all the tires to the wider XML versions.....Maple Leaf Models makes a great set with a spare. If you want to keep the original tires then it won't likely be a LAV 25 with the latest mods and Maple Leaf Models produces a LAV spare tire set for the original thinner tires.

I have seen images of LAV 25s in Iraq with an armoured vision block blast shield fixed around the commander's hatch....someone very unique and visible.

I sent the molds for the three piece thermal shield to someone on here so he could do his own. If you can wait a while (save it for the last item, as it's painted a different color anyway) maybe I can get you one before the World Series.

Yep, the SLEP XML hub has a different pattern of nuts, and longer lug nuts/bolts, something to do with the bolt length on the main hub. The Trumpeter one still doesn't seem deep enough though.
At minimum, an OIF LAV-25 has the Platt mount for the M-240 and the armoured sight cover on the left sight doghouse.

Jason, the MLM won't work. The Marines use a different style wheel than the one on the MLM set. Here's a pic showing the 2 types.

Thanks for the reminder Gary....I actually remembered that you posted that before on ML.....I was just referring to the actual tires and not the hubs.....can't do all the work for everyone, right? I should have been more specific....100 Google searches pennance for me.

Help.....for sure.....but fellow armour geeks need to leave the nest at some time and spread their resin wings or tracks or wheels with different types of hubs and bolts.

Thanks for all the tips everyone. I've been searching the net for more pics and the SLEP does have quite a few noticable differences. I'll have to add up the coin for all the extra bits. The muffler shield seems to be the hardest to find. Quite a few pics of it around so I imagine someone would produce it. I'll keep searching. I may finish the the LAV I'm working on now as OIF '03 and try the SLEP next. At the rate I build there will be other changes by then. Maybe the USMC will go with the bar armour like the Aussies ASLAV. Thanks again

Trumpeter has just announced a future release of the XML tire set for the LAV. You might want to hold out for that.

Thanks for the info! I will do just that. Makes me wonder why Trumpeter would tool up just a set of tires. Something in the pipe like an ASLAV or Canadian Coyote???? That would give people even more choices.
