Here I am with this new project: The LEOPARD 2A5DK from Hobby-Boss. With a few pictures on hand, I decided to start the project. At first look, the details are crisp and the fitting of the parts are excellent...so far.
The first step, as most armor kit, begins with the wheel and lower hull assembly.
The first thing I notice is that the running wheels are missing some bolts around the center. This is an easy thing to fix . I added those bolts using an hexagonal shaped strip styrene and sliced some thiny pieces. I found the result very staisfiying.
More to come...

Any idea as to how you will be painting it?

Luc,
As Jason said, nice fix to the missing bolts. I will also be keeping my eye on this build. I kno wthat the HB kit leaves lots of room for modeler "upgrades." Can't wait for the next installment of pics.

Thank you for the comments guys. As for the paint, I think I will go we the 2 color camo scheme, black and green. Maybe a desert scheme for a futur project , but not for this one. Next step is for the hull. Ok, I'm not an expert, but I think that the anti-slip area are way too think ! It looks more of an armor plate ! It's going to be hard to fix this without damaging the surounding details...Anyway I will try to sand them down a bit to remove the thickness. Following pictures show the hull not touched yet

Yes, the anti-slip panels are way too thick......good luck sanding them down.

How did you manage it? I've got three of these lumps in the stash and I don't relish buying a load of Tamiya ones to replace the hulls. I was thinking of wrapping fine sandpaper round the back end of a pencil and spending, ooh, hours rubbing away and rubbing away and ...

You can use masking tape as protection of the surrounding areas, and then let your Dremel do the work. fast and easy

VERY carefully used a scalpal blade to thin them down then used fine wet and dry sand paper to smoth them off.

It's been a while but here where I am with my Leo. After some attempt to correct the too thick anti-skid plate, I decided to let them like that...I did not want to get myself in a fastidious work of detail correction. I don't think that the Hobby-Boss kit deserve it..Instead I will get a second try later with the Tamiya kit. Anyway, this one will be built out of the box..almost. Here is what the kitty looks like so far:

I think Echelon has a couple of decal sets for this, maybe even a Canadian version?

The Canadian Leo is a 2A6M cdn, not the 2A5DK.

For anyone who is interested the commanders sight from the tamiya kit is a perfect fit on the hobby boss kit its a simple bit of detailing that makes a big difference.

Nice build! Hope you complete it soon.
Out of curiosity, does Hobby Boss take spare parts ordering?
I mean, I'd love to start Tamiya kit (A6) off as a basic build, and then use HB parts to enhance it! I'm sure that would be the more expensive route. But heck - I'm for quality!
Initial thought that I have would be to get the HB kits, then order Tamiya spares to improve the look of the lower hull, as well as some other parts. But what about the other way round? I think I'd save the planet by wasting less plastic!...
Anyone?

Ok, after moving in a new house lately, and settle up the work area, I'm ready for a little update on my project. I decide not to use the kit's rubber band track as I think they dont have the correct shape and detail is, well...poor. Instead I will use the workable one from AFV CLUB. Detail is really improved, even if they are a bit tricky to assemble..

Good work on this kit Luc.
Just one point concerning the AFV tracks, if you set the connector with the bolt head "inside", it will be crushed by the sprocket.
Even if HB tracks are ugly they are correct on this point.

Good point Olivier ! I did not checked on that and just follow the AFV CLUB instruction. We now know that these are incorrect. So for other modellers who reading this, take some notes !! .Here are images of the instruction:

Luc,
Are you able to fix your tracks? That would mean removing and flipping all of the end connectors 180 degrees.

Jason, I'm just at the beginning of the assembly, so no problem to flip the end connectors over. By chance I did not post after tracks been completed...
