Which Italeri Leopard II? They have a regular pre-production Leopard 2 and the newer Leopard II A5 KWS. I've always thought the Canadians used a highly modified variant of the Leopard 1. I defer which of the Italeri/Revell of Germany boxings are the best to modify into a CDN variant to the real experts.

From my understanding the Canadian Armed Forces upgraded the Leo to the 1A5 standard. The Revell of Germany kit would form an good basis for this tank. There is some additional armor array to add.
It is definitely NOT a Leo2!

The Canadian Leopards are an odd breed. The original C1 is essentially an A3, and the C2 uses these original hulls with "new" turrets from surplus A5's from the FRG. I believe that a true A5 has some hull variances from the earlier Canadian specification. HTH,

Greg has it right on the money. There are a few small differences in the Canadian hull from the original German one,(wipers for the periscopes, mounts for add-on armour, and new routing for the tow cables, interior spall liner). The Turrets are surplus German 1 A5's ,( the German reserves have upgraded to Leo 2's), that have the latest thermal sighting system,(better than the M1 A1). They also mount a muzzle reference system, and updated digital monoblock ( brain of the gunnery system).
As to the comment that the government is too cheap to buy Leo2's, the turret refit project, which was done in Chatham New Brunswick, cost more money than purchasing used Leo 2's from the Germans. I have been told the reason for that was because with all the spending cuts to social programs the government felt that the purchase of "new" tanks would not be in line. So they decided to "up-grade" so the general public would not raise a stink over defense spending when they were cutting spending on healthcare. Little do they know........
I am a tanker at the Armour School in Gagetown New Brunswick, and am qualified driver and gunner on the Leo C2.
