I know that there may have been a million posts about this BUT, I humbly request, if anyone knows, to get the dimensions of the current IFF "venetian blinds" panels. I am especially interested inthe depth of the panels. Any help GREATLY appreciated.

Sorry, didn't mean about your question. It was about my first reply, which I have deleted.

Other than asking waht they were, and some discussion within a thread about them, this is the first time this has been addressed, particualraly about the exact dimensions. So there'll be no cirsing from this quarter. To be honest, the worst that happens with a repeated question here is a link to the thread where the question was answered. :-)

M60A3 thanks for the pic, but I laready have it. My main Q, and what the pic does not address, is the thickness of the IFF panel. I am assuming it is 3-5 inches, but would rather get a correct depth. IS the outside framework flat or is it more of a U shape? Or L shape?

Yes, I am asking so I can scratchbuild...better to do with accurate dimesnions if possible rather than trust my old Mk.1 eyeball.

Print out the picture. The side view looks an isometric view, so here's what you do.
1. Print the picture.
2. Measure the known value of the panel in the picture.
3. Convert into a scale measurement using a scale calculator. This gets you the scale of the picture.
4. Measure the unknown value on the picture and convert to the scale and input into the scale calc.
5. Voila you have your unkown measurement.
I use this all the time on pictures and it is quite accurate.

Hope this helps.

I calulate it to be 2" wide.

ScaleCalculator makes things so easy. :-) :-) :-)

Hey Merkava, thanks for the idea. I have already tried to apply it, but here are some of the problems I have encountered wanting to make these accurate:

the 2 dimensional view with the measurements does not accurately reflect a 24/30 ratio, although I suppose it does not matter. The 3 dimensional view seems more accurate by look but...

1. There are only 5 "vents" on the panel. All pictures I have of Abrams IFF's have 6 "vents".

2. Looking at side views of these panels in pics, they seem to thicker than 2in, more like 4.

3. The drawing only shows 1 "slot" in the side while there are 2 in reality. This leads me to believe the drawing is either a early drawing, concept drawing, or just a general drawing.

4. The framing seems to be simple thin U-channel metal in a picture frame form, with the "vents" inside.

So I thought maybe someone who had one of these things nearby might be able to do a couple of quick maesurements to make it "official".

I appreciate allthe help so far on what some see as a irritating subject!

Jacques,
Here is a link to a thread that was on the ML modern dg earlier this month, there are some nice close-up pics of the IFF panels on an M1A1. They don't give you the size but you can really get a good idea because the surrounding area isn't covered up with the crews gear.

Thanks Kelley...the pics the Mr. De boer took look a lot more like the drawing. I must have missed that thread on M-L (IFF question fear on M-L? ) If you look hard at the pics of OIF, it seems that

1. all of the IIF panels have a enclosing top piece now and

2. they are thicker. There are no external handles, but have two "slots" in each side, not sure why...securement?

However I also agree with the comments...should be easy enough to build.
