Hi All,
Does anyone have a method for painting British WW2 uniforms around the end of '44 in NW Europe?
I can never get my attempts to look any good (paint colours would be starting point I suppose I've Tamiya acrylics and Humbrol enamels) They always seem too 'brown' or 'green' for my liking.
Thanks for any help offered.
Tom

Hi Tom,
I've switched to Vallejo English Uniform 70921. It is a much closer colour to the real material. I still use Tamiya Flat earth as a base coat.
Here's some RM I did for my LCA, you can decide for yourself.

Cheers
Al

Thanks Alan,
It looks like I'll be investing in some Vallejo paints.
In your opinion, what are the 10 most useful Vallejo colours for British troops and vehicles. Might as well get a few and not pay the postage

Hi Tom,
Vallejo make some grand colours, I use their Yellow Orchre 913 for the base colour for wood both on the rifles and boxes and also in my tank mix.
Their flesh tones come in a variety of shades so can be useful on the faces, they do a nice Gun Metal Blue 70800 and Ivory 70918 which is useful for MP white as it is not too bright. There is an Oily Steel 70865 and Green Orche 70914 I think is very close to the denim colour worn by some tankers. Burnt Umber 941 is another useful colour
In general they need a base coat so I still use a lot of Tamiya paints as their adhesion is better, but Vallejo colours seem to fit the bill for a lot of things.
For webbing I use Tamiya Buff and dirty it up and their Dark Green as the base for the helmets.
You only need a little if things have a good base coat first.
Hope this helps a bit. There are others on site who could probably give better advice, I'm no expert when it comes to paint, I mix stuff up a lot to see the results lol, lol.
Cheers

Hi, Tom...
I use Vallejo colours to paint my figures. I use:
- 921 - English uniform - the name says it all;
- 886 - Green grey - Webbing and markings (for late war soldiers)
- 924 - Russian Infantry - Helmet
- 982 /846 - Cavalary brown/ Mahogany brown- Gun, water bottle
- 950/ 861 - Black/ Glossy black - boots
I took these references from a site, I can't remember which now...
Well, I hope this helps!
Cheers and happy modelling!

Thanks for the advice all.
Alan,
I ordered some Vallejo on line. The order arrived this morning and I've painted the first fig's uniform. Fantastic! the colour looks spot on to me and I'll lighten it very slightly now and then for different figures for a little variety. Thank you for that.
One question. In your post with the Marines on the LCM. Are they the Master Box set 'british Troops, Caen 1944' I've this set in my to do stash and will complete them as regular infantry.
I'll hopefully post some pics when I'm done.
Thanks again

Hi Tom,
Yip The chap on the dek of the LCM with the rifle over his shoulder is from the MB set as is the medic in the LCA, the other fellow is in the well of the LCM. The detail on the figures is quite soft but the poses are OK. I replaced the heads. Haven't found a use for the 4th chap yet. The other fellow on the deck is the fig that came with the Dragon Firefly.
Glad the colour worked out for you, Vallejo have a great range, my only observation is that the adhesion is quite weak unless applied over a good base coat.
