hi all, i have a question concerning measurement, i am attemping to create my own houses out of form board and i am stumped with the scale, being 1/35th . What measurement is that in relation to inches or millimeters. i looked at my architect scale and the closest i am can come to a realistic value is 3/8 = 1 foot. cause i held a figure up against it and it measured out at 5 foot which would be 2 1/4 " Is this right?

Well 5 foot = 60inchs /35 = 1.71in. 12/35 in =1foot Can't think of a lower common denominator then that.
Figures sometimes fall on the "extreme" categories when it comes to size I've seen some that work out to close to 7 ft and others that are a little over 5 feet, so they can be deceiving.
Metric may be better to use when scaling down because it has smaller units. Simply count the units rather than try to figure out a fraction.
IE if your wall is 6ft 6in long then in 1/35 it would be 78in * 2.54= 198.1cm.....198.1/35= 5.66cm or 56.6mm

William,
For scale conversions software, scroll down the page to download F-O-C : Scale Calculator Program or Scale Maker Pro, they're essential for scratchbuilders!

For a rundown on scale representations wikipedia of course: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scale_model

Try Roy Porter's Model building masterclass. It's one of my building bibles and worth the 20 bucks or whatever it is now. If you have no building background, it will keep you pretty much on track and avoid the major screw ups most builders don't realize. Eventually some one comes along with more knowage than couth so this will help greatly. It does include a scale of equivalents chart which I belive can answer your question. Keep in mind though that entrance ways in Europe in the earlier years were smaller than today. The book has pic's of both old and newer buildings. Windrow & Greene publishing is the publiher but I have no e-mail add. for them. Good luck and don't forget to show us your creation.
