Hi;
I just found out the hard way that you can't paint vinyl tank treads with lacquer even if you prime. They become very brittle and snap into pieces.
Does anyone have a suggestion(s) as to what type of paint to use?
I only brush paint so I suppose my choices are going to be limited.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks;

Ron Harris

Ron, just my way of looking at things , but I don't paint them. They look like rubberband tracks, but I don't have any extra cash to spend on them. If I was goint to put a model on display or in a contest I would probably replace the tracks with something better. Just my way of thinking on the subject.

If you were painting Tamiya glueable soft plastic tracks, they weren't vinyl, they were some kind of styrene blend, and yes, they are destroyed by enamels and lacquers (even thinners). You can paint it with Tamiya acrylics.
Real vinyls cannot be glued with ordinary cement and are heat welded using a heated blade that melts the little prongs joining the ends. Academy still uses this material, and it is relatively indestructible. However, if you use an enamel (I don't recommend lacquers) do not prime, and apply as thin a layer as possible. Then apply the tracks to the model as soon as they are dry to the touch, as the paint will remain flexible for a while, and you will minimize flaking. After a few days, the enamel is hard all the way through and cannot be flexed.

I've had luck painting rubber band tracks with Krylon Fusion. It's made specifically for plastics. I've never had a problem with it cracking or peeling off.

Every time I've used enamels, the vinyl tracks or wheels end up either dissolving or becoming tacky after a few months or years.
I've had no problems using Polly Scale, Gunze Sangyo or Tamiya acrylics when painting my tracks.

I've painted the "old style" Tamiya vinyl tracks with Tamiya acrylics and not experienced any problems.

On the other hand, Academy's vinyl tracks seem to have magical paint repellant properties. I painted a set last night and after mounting them this morning, found myself covered in dried paint flakes...

Hey Ron, why would only brush painting limit your choices? You have to pour paint out of a jar into an airbrush....
Anyway, all you guys want some FANTASTIC track paint? Go to Wal-Mart or Michael's or whatever craft store you have and get a bottle of acrylic craft paint. It's sold under several names - Plaid, Tulip, Apple Barrel, Folk Art. It's a 2 oz. bottle for around 87 cents. The color to get is Brown Oxide. It's a great track color. The paint has some latex in it so it's a little rubbery after it dries - it has give to it. It will stick to old rubber tracks, new rubber tracks, styrene tracks, and metal tracks without flaking and without damaging the tracks. As long as you don't bend the tracks repeatedly it wont peel or crack. Put them on the model, give them a black wash and a little dark steel highlighting, and you're all set.
