Hi Guys
I am in the middle of making a Mid Production Tiger 1and am wondering if anyone can tell me if Zimmerit was applied after the primmer coat or over the base coat and then repainted or any other method?
I have done alot of research on this vehicle but havn't found anything on this.
Looking forward to any help anyone can give me on this.
Cheers Russ

Hey mate, guess what...i also happen have Tiger 1 Mid in progress. This is going to be my first zimmerited tank.
What i did was, I applied the milliput zimmerit first, then primer and base coat it. I'm about to paint the camo now. Though i dont know yet how my decal will fit onto that zimmerited surface
Cheers.

Please don't think this is flippant, but what difference does it make the color is going to be what you painted over the Zimmerit

I think there is great significance to the order of application in this case.
If you want to show zimmerit that has been damaged, chipped, scraped, fallen off... whatever just not there... then you need to know, the answer to the following question -
What color shows up when I remove the zimmerit coat?
I have seen many, many modelers attempt to solve this problem. The real answer is primer OR base coat... just depends on the where the zimmerit was applied. The factory would have applied the zimmerit over primer and you would see primer/bare metal where the zimmerit chips/flakes off. If it was a field/forward maintenance applied zimmerit (Actually, pretty rare for Tiger I's) then, you might see some base coat and primer and bare metal where the zimmerit flakes off.
Later,
Tim

Hi Russ:
As has been said, just place the Zimmerit and then paint your tank.

Hi Tim
Then of course, is it old or new damage, so you could have some patches with new paint, others with the primer/metal showing if they are fresh chips.
For the decals, I have used Microscale decal solvent with some success. On my Brummbar and StugIV (both with zim), I applied the decals, then gave them a good soaking with the Solvent solution. It took a couple of applications (let the first one dry before second application), the decals snugged down over the zim nicely.
Or you could hand paint the markings, just like on the real thing!
Cheers

Hi all!
The zimmerit coat was applied over the primer red on real tanks, and it had a dark yellow color, so the crew just sprayed the camo on top of it.
There is a good article here at armorama regarding this, just check the features index, youŽll find it very usefull.
Cheers

I've seen zim on some tanks at Camp Borden, and yes it's yellow in color. But I think you'd have to put a base coat over it, otherwise you'd have yellow zim on the vertical surfaces, and primer red on the horizontal surfaces. Did you mean that the tank didn't need priming again?
Some ars@holes have picked a lot of the zim off the Wirbelwind at Camp Borden, but you can still see it there. I have pics posted on TL if anyone's interested.
