G'day all,
This is a dio I did a few years ago.
The figures are scratch built appart from the heads (Hornet) and the small arms.
Thanks to Phil (Aurbun) for all the help.
Any comments would be appreciated.
Cheers Jason

LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT!! I am slowly ding an RLI dio. Building the figures is quite a task. I have two started, and another two to do. This is a great scene. Do you have any tips? Again Fantastic! This is a subject very close to my heart. Thank You.

The figures look great. What materials did you use to sculpt these?
The ground work is convincing as well.

A bonzer base there mate, very interesting subject very well done. Funnily enough it was just the other day I was thinking what possibilities there are for african themes with the stuff available. You´ve just proved that with a bit more thought & some modifications just about anything is possible. Thanks for sharing a very original piece of work with us.

Jason

I checked the date of the post as I thought the first photo was a real photo photoshopped into a frame. The vegetation and groundwork is excellent. Certainly in my excursions courtesy of the ARES I came across areas where the grasses were of a uniform height as you have depicted - making it look like a mower had gone over an area with a couple of different height settings. the wattles/acacias are also very realistic - can you let us in on the secret of their manufacture??

Oh, by the way the figures are good too.

Thanks for the great comments lads.

The figures are Magic Sculpt over a wire armature.
The heads again are from Hornet with extra detail added like hats and a beard.
The weapons are a mixture from Warriors for the RPD, Italeri for the SLR and Dragon for the AK. All of the webbing was cast from one master I made and added to the figures before the resin had cured.
Painting is done with acrylics and enamels as a base cost and oils over the top. Finished off with a few pastels.

The ground work is just dirt I borrowed from one of my old Army training grounds mixed with PVA(Brian, Wide Bay to be exact). The good thing about Australia is that most of the land and climate are very similar to southern Africa.
The grass is from a couple of cheap paint brushes I got at the local Bunning’s Hardware for $2 a brush.
The trees are from my wife’s dried flower arrangement.
A bit of pastel here and there and its all done.
One note, the only paint on the ground work was on the leaves of the trees.

I am thinking of placing one of the Mig techicals on the base to add a bit more to it.
When it was entered into a show a couple of years ago, the judges didn't judge it because the figures could not be seen!!!! That was the whole idea.

Cheers Jason Miller

It's a shame the judges counted this one out. I think the fact the figures are so hard to see give your dio a sense of tension that truly gives this dio it's life. Brillant dio buddy!
