I´m in the process of planning a Stalingrad combat dio whit the DML 7,5cm Pak 40 (6249) as the center piece together whit the DML Desperate defense Korsun Pocket (6273).
After doing some research into the subject i got some general info on the German solider in Stalingrad. Although the info & pics i managed to find on Pak 40´s in Stalingrad was......nothing. No pics no info, nothing!
Where there any 75mm Pak 40´s in Stalingrad at all?
i sure hope that my little dio project hasn't ended before it got started!
Would any kind soul please help me out ?
Any Pics of Pak 40´s in Stalingrad would be of great help and very, very appreciated.
Cheers

Christian

Hi Christian ,
I think the PaK 40 was deployed in Stalingrad I have seen pictures of captured French guns mounted on a Pak 40 carriage at Stalingrad
Have a look at the following sites :
http://www.stalingrad-info.com/
go to Wartime photos and related material on the left hand side
Photos from private German sources
German private photos and Andras photos , it looks like a unit of mountain troops posing with a Pak 40 Bare in mind during the later stages of the campaign many guns were rendered useless due to lack of ammunition, the was one recorded case were an gun commander was disciplined for destroying enemy tanks because he fired over his allotted amount of ammunition for that day , I think it is sited in Antony Beevor or William Craig can’t remember which
Also with regards to the Kosen pocket troops you had in mind , I believe that the padded uniforms depicted where in very short supply at Stalingrad , you may be safer to stick to figures in great coats.
Hope this helps best wishes,
Jerry

Hey there Christian
From what i have discovered the Pak 40 was developed between 1939 and 1940
and was issued to front line troops starting in 1941.

Horst

Thanks for the help guys.
Most of the germans i´ll use for the dio have greatcoats including the Heer crew that comes whit the Pak 40 ( although i´ll modify them slightly ) but i´ll use the padded unifroms as well in order do achieve that that un-uniform look.
Cheers

Hi Christian,
Yes the timeframe should place Pak 40's at Stalingrad, although they would not be as popular at this time as they would be in later years with the Pak 38 still being a major part of AT gun forces.
The gun Jerry mentions is most likely a Pak 97/38, which consisted of captured French Cannon de 1897 WW1 artillery gun that being of a larger calibre than the 50mm Pak 38 were used as a stop gap AT gun against the heavily armoured T-34's and KV-1's, and were mounted on a Pak 38 carrige. (Dragon and Italeri do make kits of these if you are interested). However, these were never a popular weapon due to low muzzle velocity and vicious recoil and were re-located to 2nd line units as soon as Pak 40's became available in large numbers.
As for the Korsun Pocket Gen 2 kit, while it is a nice kit, It depicts later war soldiers than the stalingrad timeframe. The uniforms as Jerry mentions would not really have been seen in Stalingrad, and some of the weapons in the kit are also a bit late for your purposes. The MG-42 for example would only just be seeing action and the Gweher '43 rifle was yet to be seen at all, however, I'm sure with a bit of alteration you may be able to pull it off without any major issues.
If you are interested, I built a Korsun pocket dio a little while ago using both the kits you mention, which may be of some use to you for ideas. The gallery can be seen HERE.
HTH,
James

No worries Jerry, wouldn't have called them gaps myself, I was just adding to your own comments!
Thanks for the comment about the dio, it took about 2 years on and off! (I kept losing interest!)

Woow..that´s a great dio you got there!
Indeed, im only going to use Kar 98´s and MP40´s ( incl the MG-42) for the build. And i´ll try and make some modifications on the infantrymen as i go along.
Even though it might have taken you two years james, your dio turned out splendid!
Thanks for the help.
