Briefly, here's the steps I follow. I will try to add a visual step by step in the near future. I think I'm finished with this project unless anyone thinks the star should be removed.
Base color
Weathering
Oil wash (soft white)
Oil wash (raw umber) very light
After drying, rough up with plain mineral spirits
Spot washing of earth colors (your choice)
More washes - plain mineral spirits
Base color and Clear coat on various edges

I have some brass 37's, 50's and 75's so I'll try to do better with the shell hits.
